Default 4th token goes into hopper instead of back to tray

I just saw a flyer in the laundromat and went over and bought a Hanabi. Its by Aruze and is a 1,2 or 2 coin slot.
    Here's the trouble.
Whenever more than three tokens are inserted it will let the extra token go into the hopper instead of being kicked out to the tray.
The Credit feature is OFF so any extra tokens should be returned, not kept,
but they are simply going into the hopper.
Of course, when the credit is ON they tally up but I tried going over 50 and they still drop into the hopper??
    Any ideas?
The coin mechanism seems okay. It has me stumped.

When you do a spin and insert a token while the reels are spinning, do they go into the hopper or out the front?

If into the hopper, the coin mech reject solenoid is set to not reject anything. It's either jammed accidentally or on purpose.

    Hi!
Tried what you said a few times and it does go right into the hopper.
I'll take it out and give it a close look.
    Thanks

After you put in 3 tokens, depending on the type mech you have, you should hear a click from the solenoid.

Okay, I have taken out the mech and removed the solenoid. I just put a meter on the wires coming out of the solenoid to see if there is a circuit and the needle does not move.
When the tokens are inserted I can hear them register but when I drop in the 4th there is no sound at all. I tried watching the mobo and the LEDs register each token drop exactly the same way each time including the 4th.
How can I check the solenoid? doesn't look tampered with. I tried to gently move the inner bar to see if it moves at all but it seems frozen.

Do the tokens drop into the hopper if they are inserted while the game is off?

The solenoid energizes to allow tokens to be counted and drop into the hopper, after the third token or the 53 (depending on how the game is set) or when the reel lever is press and the reels are spinning, it shuts off and allows the tokens to then drop out the front.

Check to see if there's power to the solenoid connection when the game is on. It may be bad and someone jammed the track so the tokens would always pass the sensors, no matter what.

    Hi!
Had to put the mech back together and then had to do a full reset.
Yes, they drop into the hopper when the power is off.
When you say it could be jammed are you referring to the magnet bar in the center of the solenoid? It seems to not want to move no matter what.
Not able to test the power to the solenoid with my meter. (not enough hands!) Only have the needles on my leads.

another way to check is to remove the solenoid, connect it to power and turn on the game. Then see if a screwdriver is attracted to it. I don't know what your mech looks like, so it's hard to say.

Okay, what seems to be happening is the solenoid energizes one way to allow the tokens free passage but when the 3rd token passes by I think it is supposed to reverse and that movement would cause the reject arm to hold firmly in place causing additional tokens to be kicked out to the tray.
That is not happening. The solenoid does not reverse polarity. Is that possible? Is that correct? Any sugestions?
Oh this is a standard coin mech found on almost all older Aruze and related machines.

Perhaps a spring is loose or missing?

    The spring!!!
    You got it!
Its practically useless. No strength. Just have to find that box of odd little springs I've collected over the years and see if I have or can make one fit!
    Many thanks!!

    Editing:
I just jury rigged it with a tiny rubber band to apply tension and it works perfectly!!! rejects the 4th coin every time!
Now I have to dig around for that box of springs. Hope I can find it!
    Thanks a million, Compirate!!
