    Default Electric nail/pin puller

Why is Mr. Banana once again shaking his skinny yellow booty, you ask?

Starting from the mopar corkscrew idea, and turning the idea over in my head while singing in the shower this morning, I came up with the following (see pics).

It's made form a turnbuckle. End cut off and ground so that 2 decent sized pads rest at 90 degrees to the playing field, straddling the nail. The ends are padded to protect the field.

I didn't want it to twist and twist and twist at the nail head, so I slotted and attached and a 110lb swivel (from the fishing section) to the mechanism.

It is chucked into a cordless drill to pull the nail. I just tested it. Works like a charm and oh so fast. I'll let you know how it holds up after a few hundred nails, but I foresee no problems.

Enjoy! Hope this is of use to you nuts who like to remove all your nails. It took about 45 minutes to make.

great idea. I think there's a power tool for this, too.

I ordered and put a snipe on the bridgeport 56, so should have some info on that later, too

That's why I couldn't get myself to go with the corkscrew idea (well, that and we had company on the way over and they were bringing wine)

I have no video camera (and that would cost me about as much as a dozen pachinko machines!).
I was hoping people would build them and try them out for themselves. An excuse to restore a playfield (I may have lost my excuse, but I have the tool now just in case...).
I'll see how my phone does with video. Not pretty I'm guessing.

Great idea! I will have to make one when I need it.

Mudfud, the bridgeport 56 is something that really comes in handy. I have used one many times. It is for when you need to get the nail head above the surface of the wood. The sliding part of the shaft hammers the two claws below the surface to grab the nail head. Used mainly for framing nails. It will sometimes pull the nail all the way out but mostly just enough to get at the head with the claw hammer.
If you ever need to use it for it's intended purpose watch the hand placement!

    Very Well Done!

I have a waterlogged machine I am stripping of parts and I will make one of these to recover the nails.

    Thanks!

As for putting my nails in I am going to use an arbor press to press in the nails. I will be using a new piece of plywood for the cell and predrilled, undersized holes that stop short of where the twist ends up.

The press should keep me from to much nail bending(the bad kind) and get the height set easily.

I played with the toy a bit more tonight. It does work very well, but I'm thinking a modified corkscrew (the double wing/arm type), as suggested by mopar, may actually be quicker, just as effective, and just as easily built. If one can tighten up the corkscrew (or replace it with something) so that you when you take a couple turns it winds onto the pin shaft, and cut the circle that will cause problems resting on the playfield so that it is just 2 legs, it might work fantastic. I don't like the ritual of reversing the drill and winding the one that I created down again before moving to the next pin. Still pretty fast though.

I think a purely mechanical one might be more practical. I'll swing into the dollar store on my way home from work tomorrow and pick one up. If it works, I'll let you know. If it doesn't, I'll hang my head in shame and/or blame mopar
