and I'm going to look for a crescent 56 nail puller. apparently the classic, and it has a slide hammer mechanism.

that's a very good point. I will see how bent they end up with that device.

I got the bridgeport 56 yesterday, and I can't get it to work right... when I whack with the sliding weight, the jaws open. am I supposed to squeeze the nail at the same time? was thinking of adding a spring to keep the jaws shut below the nail head.

    anyone have any ideas?

im not 100% sure but i think the weight is to drive the claws into the wood to grab the nail... the u use the tool to pull the nail like a reg hammer.. the more u pull it over on its foot the harder it bites on the nail...

duhhh. I was using it backwards. I did some searches and you are RIGHT. supposed to use the slide thing to get the jaws to go around the nail head when the nail is below the surface. then pivot on the foot to remove... this would keep the jaws shut.

i'll try it again. plan to try nail pulling techniques on the sumo machine. the nails are so corroded that polishing in bulk is the only way to go.

maybe I could weld a little side hook for pachi nails on one of the 56's claws, then use it as a slide hammer afterall...

Did I mention that I invented 2 gentle but effective and fast pachinko nail pullers... just for you?

C'mon, try it. It will make this old fart of a would-be inventor giddy.

Let me know if you'd like me to mail you one. Seriously.

sure. I'll try yours. I can do a controlled experiment

pliers vs. yours vs. bridgeport 56 vs. the one on order. see which one has the least damage to cell, to nail and which is faster, easiest... pachi research article!

hey mopar, that's what I was worried about. thought I would either add a little pachi nail hook, or notch the jaws. whaddaya think?

Cool. Which would you prefer trying-- the corkscrew or the drill-powered turnbuckle?

(and BTW, notch the jaws, IMHO)

as bought i think u run the risk of cuting the heads clean off.. the cam motion will have a nasty tendancy to bend them..

i would also have consern about using a slide hammer as well.. its not going to bend the nail but im worried about the viloant extraction damagin the wood of the cell...

slow and easy wins this race

I agree about the slow and easy being more gentil to the cell. I think the hand powered corkscrew idea is what I'd bet on. If you see damage starting you might have time to stop. I would love to see the reserch paper on this subject though.

I hear that "Pachitalk U" Is tight with the grant money but they would publish your work so that millions and millions of people around the world "could" read it.

my latest 2 nail pulling acquisitions from ebay

VINTAGE NAIL PULLER SAMSON PAT. AUG. 1892 @ MAR. 1 1898 - eBay (item 120513144912 end time Jan-09-10 13:03:25 PST)

    Vintage Cast Iron Pincer & Nail Puller V & B - eBay (item 310191639016 end time Jan-06-10 1208 PST)

Bridgeport Hardware No. 56 Suregrip Nail Puller - eBay (item 330390088210 end time Jan-02-10 19:20:27 PST)

clearly, I had a little too much time on my recent round of night shifts in oakland...

so the contest is these three, the one I ordered that uses a hammer (but looks to bend the nails a lot)

    and the corkscrew by siouxz.

any wagers as to the outcome?
