I played with the corkscrew quite a bit more last night. I'm afraid that I'm going to have to wager on that one. What are the stakes?
I do want to redesign the feet before sending, however. Even with the minimum contact, adjacent cell features still get in the way sometimes. Should be an easy fix.

    When's the deadline for submission?

Ya know, this tool may be even more perfecter (that was a fun phrase) if instead of having feet resting on the cell, it pulled through a hole in a long, narrow beam that rests across the cell frame. If that made any sense.

hey sioux, I agree that some kind of base that elevates the nail puller would be good, so it dissipates the pulling force over a larger area. also, the nails already stick out more than 1/2 inch, so we don't need a claw or jaws to dig into the wood to get the nail started.

I look forward to messing with the samson one. maybe put a wood base or feet to balance, then have the jaws dip down and grab the nail head?

Wow Mudfud that thing is a beast! I like it!

This is what I have used. It is a nail puller that I modified by using a hacksaw blade and cutting a slot and then using a needle file to smooth the slot. I cover the face with two layers of masking tape(replaced it 3X for 220 or so nails). It does not mar the shaft or the head.

I use a block of wood that is a little taller than the nails on one side and about a quarter inch taller on the other and a quarter inch thick( the end of a 2x2 works well) I pull once then turn the block and finish the pull.

Two hours and Two beers and Two goes is about as long as it takes. Then a few hours in the vibratory tumbler and they are like new.

    hey cystic,

what did you use to cut the notches in the gripper end to hold the nails?

we ran into some trouble b/c the steel nibbler is so hard that we used a grinder wheel. this led to a slot that was too wide and hard to control.

wondered what you used for your slots/grooves.

posted a separate nail pull-off thead.

I just used a hacksaw to cut the slot then a needle file to smooth and open the slot a bit.

It was not a top of the line hardened tool, just a cheap one I received in a bunch of tools I bought from an estate.

thanks. I am going out to buy a couple more nibblers from harbor freight, one at 90 degrees, one at 45 degrees to the nail, to have options.

I will try the simple hacksaw, duh, instead of the hard to control grinding wheel.

I like the Idea with a beam across the board. feet pressing down on the edge where the frame covers up. Add the corkscrew idea to that beam frame. Then instead of using the drill or hand power, make it numatic or hydrolic. Press a button and POP the nail out! How about a magnet to remove the nail from the tool in the upper position so it can return quickly to the next nail.

bridging across the nails worked well, where they were close by. brass is non-magnetic

As a matter of fact, yes. I was looking at those at Harbor Freight a couple weeks ago and couldn't figure out a way to easily modify the ones they had, and I wasn't sure the pull was long enough.

I'm also thinking that a modified blind rivet tool might work.

yes, I looked at the cable tie guns. problem was it was hard to figure out how to modify, and they are very expensive.

the lee valley tool came today. will try it tonight.

This is what I use. The tool is an automotive door panel removal tool modified in the same way described here.
Drilled hole, cut hole open and filed edges down, wood base for support. The wide original opening allows clearance for other nails and pulls them up with minimal bending
