Default Okay, now I'm in big trouble...

The wife thinks I'm out of control; the kids think I'm crazy. Perhaps they are both right.

I just told her today, "Look honey, I only need 3 more machines. I need a single shot that predates my Nishijin B, an Arepachi, and a modern that predates the Gladiator. Then we'll have them arranged in order and it will be a pachinko museum."

She doesn't like the sounds of that. But anywho...

I found 2 of the 3 through a friend of a friend of a friend tonight. The guy was going to put them in a garage sale but will practically give them to me if I pick them up in the morning.

I think you know where this is going.

    I'm afraid

it's really OK. we all have the same stories here. you are among friends

we can always give you good reasons to buy another pachi, and lots of lines to tell the wife...

just remind her that collecting pachi's is cheap, and she'll always know where you are (in the garage fixing another one, or on the computer on pachitalk). that's where I've been for the last year and I still love it!

Just remind your wife how lucky you are that you are able to pick up these beautiful machines at such good prices, and what an important job you are doing in preserving them for future generations

I only wish that I could find the many different ones you have available over there, not to mention at those bargain prices too!!

Mudfud is correct - most all of us have been, or are still in your position. Once you start collecting it really is very difficult to stop. The next stage is to begin collecting them secretly and stashing them in places your wife will not find them - many of us still do this.

Keep in mind that you have a very low cost hobby that keeps you home at night and brings you so much fun and enjoyment. How can she argue with that?

I took my "hobby" a step further late last year and created a small side business out of it by offering to repair and restore pachi's for people in my area for a very low fee, and I get a pretty good response. Not only do I get to see and play with other people's Pachis, but I use the proceeds to buy more pachis or other similar games for my collection and my wife no longer gets upset about my purchases. Now she just rolls her eyes when she sees another game added to my collection.

It takes time, but I am sure you will break her in eventually. I think we all manage to get to that point sooner or later.

    Good luck!

    Jeff

It took me a little while to find, but perhaps you should read BigDog's 12 Step Program for Pachi Addicts. It may help!

I don't even worry about it anymore. My wife knows that I have 20 pachis already but she doen't know that the 21st is already hidden in the garage. I'll bring it inside someday while she is out shopping and she won't even notice it. The more you get, the less noticable each addition becomes. A good rule to follow.

I know very well the addiction that pachinko brings since i got my 1st made in Japan "Castle Royal" in 1976 i was hooked and the only way that i stopped was The Army 1982-2005 and moving alot 88-94 .

Yes, it is a good idea to stop counting them after 10 or 15 . I enjoyed each machine i own/owned and have had many a favorite . The only thing stopping my collection now is the future restoration and personalizing my 1981 Volvo DL .

I went the other direction. I used to restore Mopar muscle cars and had quite a fleet, but ended up selling them all off over time-- tough financial times, kids, etc. This allows me to tinker. I'm a chronic tinkerer and enjoy restoring just about everything. I also am a chronic animal rescuer. This hobby is satisfying that urge too, in a way. That's probably why I'm quickly discovering that I'm far more interested in vintage machines than moderns. Save those sad, poor souls from the dumpster.

Anyway, let me ask you this, and anyone else who may be reading this. I've known 2 types of pahinko owners-- sick in the head (like us) hobbyists and people who have one, don't use it, and have it stuffed away forgotten in a corner or the like.

What attracts the rest of you to this hobby, with an apparent madness. I'm still discovering this for myself, but I think it's boiling down to:
    1) Works of art, endless unique varieties.
    2) An excuse to tinker.
    3) An excuse to make something old pretty again.
    4) Mesmerizing chaotic ball bouncing action (still not sure why that's "doing it" for me).
    5) Makes the family question my sanity, yet again (oh, that's not a reason so much as a bonus side-effect).

Im not sure what really attracts me... all your reasons are great... but what would be my first... to rember my youth and that my Dad had 2 machines.. use to play them on the weekends when i would go for visits

    but #5 is the best
