a day of working on the frankenFlash, with some good progress. it is really starting to look like a pachinko again
assembled the 3 plastic sides and one wood bottom piece. had to adjust the screws some as they weren't threaded deeply enough.

moved the corner brackets over to the acrylic. had a gap b/c the acrylic's only 1/2 and the wood was 5/8 inch. may shim later, but it's already pretty solid

tricky part was putting the hinges back on, with the difference in thickness. I opted not to notch the upper plastic piece, but did some creative drilling and grinding with the dremel tool.

the latch piece (the spring loaded hooks) went on without having to mill out a notch, in this case the thinner material being an advantage for me, giving me an extra 1/8 inch on the inside of the frame.

mounted the front frame onto the hinges and it all fits together quite well.

I am very happy with the progress and really tired out from all the bending and reaching... bad back complaining.

anyhow, the bad weather kept me from driving to sacramento to use the milling machine, so I found ways to do what I needed to by hand.

i'm quite close to mounting the cell into the frame. that should be really exciting. will post tonight if I get that far.

    more pix

p.s. I used a smaller screw next to the embedded tap to hold the bottom frame in place. you can see in one of the pix how the white hole is wider and messier. i will try one of the clear epoxy's maybe, and some acetone to mend the fine split in the acrylic

    Default visible powerFlash... she's naked!

for some reason, I cannot access the first frankenFlash thread right now. sid and I are trying to figure it out, don't know if it might be a macintosh thing? any other mac people not able to get to the thread?

so, for now, being so excited about the unveiling, I had to start another thread. maybe they can be merged, after I get access to the first thread again.

    drum roll please...

here she is, miss visible power flash... in all her beauty.

I am waiting to strip off all the paper, once I finish banging around installing the pachinko mechanisms and solenoids and such... don't want to scratch the acrylic too much.

p.s. a couple lessons: take the paper off the joints before screwing and gluing them together, maybe sticky mylar wasn't the best idea, it shows little marks on the plastic... maybe float a sheet of mylar next time.

hey jeff. I am lucky that the wife doesn't visit pachitalk. if she saw the state of the living room when I do my projects, she would blow a gasket. though, she's probably used to it, growing up with a dad that brought his motorcycle into the kitchen to work on in the winter, when mom wasn't home...

I like to be "one" with my projects and tools. usually bare foot and sitting on the floor, though I have gotten a few foot splinters from remodelling without shoes.

what is that saying about a cluttered desk/mind... mine is a cluttered floor/mind. I like sitting with my tools circled around me for easy access.

hey sioux, ask your co-worker how much for the authentic, antique japanese mahogany frame? I have two now.

today should be fun as I start to put the powerflash front tulips, nails and thunderbird into place. I think the nails with a dab of GOOP will be the trick.

more videos to come, too, when I get back to my desktop machine. this hackintosh netbook is great for surfing and email, but can't handle the heavy lifting of video editing.

question for those of you that have added a deeper cabinet to your pachinkos. mine is tipping forward right now, but I think it is b/c there is no jackpot layer and heavy solenoid layer yet. did you have to have a foot extending forward from the machine? I thought that the 5 inches deep case would be adequate, but now I am not sure. Jeff, did your oak frame include a foot plate in the front, to keep it from tipping forward? I may have to add some kind of front foot to the cabinet.

First of all ...what a thrill ride watching your project come together and still more to come! Secondly I had to laugh real hard because my home/ usually my living room really suffers during my projects. I'm in awe of your project...great job!

This looks so cool! I find Vintage Pachinko machine to be so facinating because other engineering of the mechanics and to have a machine that not only plays cool but you can see the stuff work too!

    So awesome!

You will have an extremely rare and hightly valued machine when you get done!

Can say enough how awesome this is!

Here is a pic of one of the new frames I made using oak. I also created a foot/pedestal to keep it from tipping while being played.

    Does this answer your question?

One of the Machines the Lt droped by is in a case and its really front heavy...

once u get the back on and most important balls in the hopper u should be good to go ..

a set of clear feet would not be a bad thing i would hate to hear aobut how it fell over

are u planing on flame polishing the groove u cut into the back ?? doc has a great how to Vid on flame polishing... im sure the cuts are deep but even a little polishing would hepl take the cloud out...
