    OK. dad finished the edging.

one more trip to sac't to cut troughs on the back, and I should be starting the assembly phase.

I was thinking to do the side and top of the pachi frame in acrylic, too, since I have extra... or, if I leave the wood, then I could run wires up and around the edges...

    thoughts?

I'd do the sides in acrylic and still run the wires up the side.

the mylar arrived today. big, heavy tube of it. looks pretty thick, so hopefully won't be too hard to affix without bubbles. still probably need 4 hand on deck.

have to decide whether to just punch through the mylar, or drill it (don't want to get little fragments and dust under the mylar.

anyone used it on pinball that can tell me if the mylar will split if I just nail through it?

hmmmm i don't know. the 2 mil i used was easy to nail thru with no distortion around the hole. if the other methods don't work maybe you could heat up a punch to melt thru each hole first??? sounds time consuming though. i think as long as you lay it down good then any dust/debris from drilling will fall down the existing hole and not underneath mylar.

well, since I have about 6 feet of mylar, I will experiment before sticking to the final cell.

maybe a small drill would be good, though I do not relish the idea of having to drill those 200 holes again...

and along those terms, I read today that you can use ketchup to polish brass... cheaper yet is vinegar and salt, can make a paste using flower... this is according to heloise.

I am driving to sac'to again, so obsessed with this project. hoping to get the final slots cut and do some mylar experiments. as always "i'll be back" with photos and vids

Too bad the mill isn't computer controlled, program all the pins and openings and you could make the cell face again and again!

indeed! as I was going around and around in the different holes, it occurred to me that I probably could have outsourced this to someone with a laser cutter... but then, where's the fun?

I will keep the wood board as a template, if future PF modders want to use it.

off to do more milling tonight. maybe finish the cuts?

p.s. I decided to go with acrylic for the sides and top. more visible that way. my wiring will just have to be neatly done for a change.

I say have the wiring neat but where it's supposed to be in the back. It's the whole reason your doing it clear in the first place. Of course, using clear covered wire would be cool too I believe a lot of speaker wires are clear coated.

    franken flash progress:

finished all the slots and holes on the cell, front and back.

cut 5 inch wide by 30 inches strips of acrylic to use for the sides and the top of the frame. I plan to make the new frame deeper than stock, so that the mechanism does not stick out the back... like a built in case this way.

had a couple mishaps... clamps caught on parts of the machine, piece got loose... luckily, nothing that mattered, and no bodily damage.

tried a small piece of mylar, and the nails punch right though. no splitting or deforming. should be fairly easy to push the nails right through the sheet, and use an exacto to cut out the tulip pockets

tried the fit on a couple tulips, after grinding the angle at the bottom of the cell to accomodate the ball falling through the tulip. works great.

question. what kind of hardware would look best to hold the upper corners of the acrylic frame together? I thought maybe some nice brass or stainless machine screws, threaded into the plastic pieces.

I have thought of a new ball recirculating method, too. it's one that I have wanted to do for a while, but didn't want to mess up the original wood frame. now that I am removing most of the frame and replacing with the acrylic, I can do whatever.

will post pix later, can't get them to upload on mom's computer.

franken pachi is close to having its parts together. soon, it will be ALIVE...

    YouTube - franken 5

lastest video upload. still working out the correct format for this camera. this one is clearer, but squished a little horizontally... urrghhh, and every export takes almost a 1/2 hour.

I'll keep trying to get the "perfect" upload. maybe by the time I finish this project?
