one thing that might look cool would be to add lights for each payout.. something like green when u hit the jack queen king etc and red when u hit the jokers..

mudfud, have you come up with a way to attach the tracks to the acrylic? i was thinking of using whatever pound test of fishing line to keep things clear but still figuring out how to secure that in the back without being unsightly and not in the way of the solenoid layer and rearmost layer.

    hey emmadog.

good question. I did not want to replace the cotter pin style things again, since they would show through, so I noticed that when I pulled them out, if I cut at the back right where the wires were bent, I had a cotter pin without flared legs.

going to use these pins to push into predrilled holes and GOOP them into place.

figure that I will have all the nails going through the acrylic anyhow, so what's a few more track holders?

can't wait to do some more work. may drive back up to sac'to on the 1st, if new year's isn't too busy... I'm having amazing quality bonding time with my dad - really.

    Great videos as usual!!

I don't think it would turn out too well if I went at a pachi with a dremel!!

What does your dad think of your pachi obsession??

Have you tried putting any nails into a piece of scrap acrylic or anything yet..to see how it goes??

Hey Mudfud, I was wondering how you were going to get the placement of the playfield nails identical to the original? I was doing some thinking on it but haven't come up with anything yet. I suppose you could drill the nail holes all the way through on the original wood playfield then place that atop the acrylic and placing a thin punch or a nail thru the hole make an indentation/mark in the acrylic below.

I will be testing the acrylic to figure out just the right size hole for a friction fit without cracking.

dad's just happy to have me home to hang out. he shrugs about the pachi's, but he has so many hobbies (gunsmithing, skiing, scuba, archery, building on his property in the foothills, photography...) that he can't complain.

hey emmadog. we are going to drill straight through the current nail holes and into the acrylic, with a depth guide to get the holes "just right"

the acrylic is 1/2 inch (3/4 inch was too expensive for me) and the cell is closer to 3/4 inch, so the nails will be placed so they are almost coming out the back of the acrylic. I measured all this and checked.

could they be glued in? Hole just the right size, and a little glue.

You and your dad make a great team when it comes to pachis, great job so far. That's the kind of project that I like to get involed in myself. Getting some great ideas from your thread so far. can't wait to see where this goes from here.

I looked at your other vids of the Citicar, I never saw one of those before, I wanted a golfcart for the campground but now I think one of those would be better.

    the latest frankenFlash updates...

spent yesterday and this morning milling and drilling... ahh, the Zen of milling. it really is a meditative practice for me. I did break 2 small drills off, will have to retrieve the ends later.

tried a router (well, dad did) and found that I could do just as well freehanding with the milling machine. I felt like the cuts were smoother this way, too.

for reference, the larger long nails and the twisted nails fit "just right" into a 5/64 inch hole. the small brads that hold the tulips in place fit a number 53 drill hole.

I drilled the holes just short of coming through the back of the acrylic. The nails land just right, with the oxidation line landing right at the front of the acrylic. as mentioned, I will use a spot of glue to hold the nails from spinning or backing out.

there's a couple pix of my playfield plastics repairs. I used epoxy putty and formed corners for where the pieces had broken. it sticks well and is very moldable. I will sand down the back when it's hardened.

last steps pending are cutting down the edges of the acrylic in the shape of the wood, then flipping to cut the few troughs for ball flow that were behind the thunderbird wings (I think).

one more trip to sac'to should do it.

for brightening up the nails, can I drop them in vinegar then dry and tumble?

Yes , extreme patiences to do that work .

Last time I operated a Bridgeport milling machine was back in the late 70's at my Dad's Tool& Die shop .

The last time i did some mass drilling and Plunge routing was in 1990-93 at Biologic Aquarium Products making the parts for a complex filter for salt/fresh water fishes . (Also the fun of Flaming the edges of the clear plastics .)

I'm going to have to come up and see this pachinko some time soon .

Very nice machine work by the way
