computer guru needed

I have an 80 gb western digital drive i took out of a directtv tivo system that i want to put in a usb external drive box.

i have the jumper setup at cable, but my computer does not recognize the drive??

my other options are
slave
master with slave present
single or master

any ideas, thanks in advance

Try them all, what do you have to lose? Just don't button it up till you find out.

i did try them all it should be g drive, but, g drive doesn't even show, vista does recognize when i plug in the usb.

I went back to the 160gb i had in it orginally, which works great.

I guess I'll try the 80gb in my old hp 40gb computer

Good idea Lucky to use that drive. Another twist to this same type of problem. I have Dish Network, can you down load from the DVR to play what you recorded on a computer?

if it is formatted for the tivo you may need to do a format on it before the computer can see it

i put the 80gb in the old 40gb hp computer,

i have the 3 xp hp install cd's, its doing a format right now

going to update 256 ram to 1 gb

that computer was always as slow as molasses

when i cancelled direct tv all the movies i had on this drive were locked and i could not view them anymore, so no loss there.

it won't take my recovery cd's it can't see that its an hp computer

its setting up right now

Yes, LD,
Direct Tv & Dish Network drive are not recognized by windows. you need specail software to read them from windows. If you just want to reuse the drive for windows then you can re-format it.

if the drive number never comes up on external drive, how do you refomat them??

it formatted mine after i installed it in computer with my recovery disk!!

that is one way. there is software the will recognize the drive even if windows does not.

i disconnected my dvd drive and set cmos to defalut

it keeps wanting to boot from a: drive now

I may just put the slow already xp loaded 40gb drive back in!!

Boot device priorty make it CDROM or DVDRom 1st boot

because the cd drive is listed as a slave drive on the secondary channel. Has to be a master to boot. Disconnect the cd and reconnect the dvd.

hit f12 during boot should give a boot device menu choose boot from cd .

Did you load windows on the C drive yet or is that what you are trying to do.
