    Default proper nail angle

    hi guys.

johnny's question about getting nails at 6 degrees reminded me to ask:

are the nails actually inserted at a 6 degree upward angle, or are they bent up 6 degrees after being pounded in perpendicular?

I am guessing they are whacked in at 6 degrees upward so I was planning to pre-drill the holes part way on a pachinko project I am designing... maybe shim the whole back board on a milling machine table at 6 degrees, and drill them all that way?

does that seem the way to go?

the holes where the balls fall through to the back are angled much more than 6 degrees, maybe 20-30, so they will roll properly.

I did some reading on this subject thanks to a member sending a detailed document onthe "art" of nail bending. It's quite involved and very interesting with "nail doctors" being a very valuable asset to a parlor. I'll see if I can locate it. Anyway, I believe the nails are
inserted with a slight upward bend at the factory which also causes a slower game due to the balls bouncing back up after hitting a nail. Nails bent to the left cause the balls to go right and vice
    versa. So nails around pockets
were bent in a certain way to make the game easy or hard depending on the proprietor's wishes although nail bending is or
    was
    supposedly not allowed.

I think Emmadog pointed out that once removed, all the nails had the same bend in them. Seems that on the model-a spare parts machine that I have, the nails went in straight, and were then bent. But I will have to take a closer look.

Great idea with the milling machine. I was thinking about cutting a piece of soft wood at a 6 degree angle, then notching it so that the pin would slide into it.

I would love to see that book. I think Microbus has it.

As I have stated before an actual nail bending tool is great to have. You can grab just part of the nail shaft or the whole thing so you can bend a part or the whole nail. Some nails will invariably be bent when pulling you pull them out.

I printed out that nail-bending guide. It was very involved. I am planning to put it in with the "Winning Pachinko Book" when it ever gets to OHIO.

I made a tool to make it easy to bend the nails , made it out of a screwdriver.

Watching one of those old videos of the guy pounding in the nails, it looked like his tool to hold the nail may have had an angle to it and it only let the nail go in so far. It held the nail like plyers but with a head the size of the nail height. (hard to explain-watch the video)

When redoing my Power Flash it was apparent after pulling out the nails that they were nailed in straight and then bent up, HTH.

Yeah, I found a website awhile back that had this excerpt converted to html. I just converted every page to PDF. If anyone wants a copy just PM with your email address. It's just too large to post here.

The name of the book (or maybe just a chapter) is "The fundamentals of nail placement". Maybe you could search it yourself.

back in 1977 with my 1st pachinko i decided to do an experiment I.E.: make all the nail braids straight and level , well the play was flat with the little sphere's not really "bouncing" so i brought them back to a little upward 's and it brought it back to nice bouncing play.

Wait a minute! Some website already has it in HTML format?

I am trying to convert it to text (MS WORD) using ABBY Fine Reader OCR, but its a slow and painful process.

If I could find that website, it would be awesome. Looking now!

I will try to put all the pages together into one pdf document, see if I can reduce size, so it can be posted in the references.

eddie had referenced a japanese one that had great cartoons, but the link doesn't work anymore. I think I downloaded that (other computer), so if I can find that, I will upload it, also.

use adobe acrobat to merge the pages together, then decrease size.

I am at work, or I would do some searching myself.

Higher angle, more bounce, lower angle less bounce
