the ad does say used and cleaned and polished
so I would assume they are the plated ones like Arby had
and they are 1/2 the price he had paid.

the gold ones are fine. It is the other ones...Red, Blue, Green that the color rubs off on everything they touch like the cell, ball paths...

I have several thousand of these and no problems with the color coming off. I use 100% gold balls in my Montreal Olympics machine (the Olympics are all about gold).
Do you know how many directions 500 steel balls can go on a tile floor...
