Smile 1950's Allwin "Win and Place" Penny Arcade Game

(I wasn't sure which forum to submit this post to, so if it needs to be moved, please let me know.)

Well, after being lost in a UPS warehouse for over a month, it FINALLY arrived!!

The seller packed it very well and it arrived undamaged and ready to play. I was even surprised to find that the steel balls were still inside after nearly 60 years!! I only had to do a minor amount of adjustments to get it working, and now it works like a champ! (Special thanks to Derek1960 for sending a supply of old british pennies to use in the machine!!) The "cricket" was included as promised, but didn't survive the journey in one piece. It also turned out that is wasn't a cricket, but a cockroach so it was moved to the trash instantly.

I plan to fully disassemble, refinish and restore this machine next spring or summer and make it look as close to new as possible, but am happy to be able to play it in the meantime. I have already spent several hours playing the game and learning how it works, and my family seems to enjoy this one more than any of my Pachinko machines. I personally find this game very addicting!!

I created a short video that shows how it plays and posted it on YouTube, but I'll warn you - this was my first attempt at playing while shooting video and narrating, so I apologize in advance for the obvious flaw in the video when you watch it.

YouTube - 1950's Allwin - Win and Place

Here are some pictures I took of the machine itself. It has a very simple design and should be pretty easy to disassemble and restore. I plan to add more of these to my Vintage Arcade Games collection as I find them, so I get "dibbs" on the next one!!

    Enjoy!

    Jeff

    congratulations

I know the seller did sound a little flaky at points, but I actually thought they sounded honest.

nice machine! I hope to get an allwin in my collection some day, too.

I agree, it looks even better in your pics and video

    Superb buy!!

I am hoping to get a couple for myself, I already have a stock of Old Pennies i found recently

There is something very satisfying about the simple way the Allwins play and the solid way they are made

On some Allwins, you get little prizes like tubes of sweets, when you turn the knob to receive your payout
, and those are fun too

I love those old machines .So simple and no electronics. And the smell...Although I prefer the smell of old pins

    Ablolutly awesome!

I love the old mechanical machines over the electronics.

I am now looking for one of those for myself. (you can't call dibs! You have one already!) What am I saying...I can't spend that much...without permission

    Great find.

I do want to see how the mechanics work on it. And I want to see a video of you getting a ball in 3rd, 2nd, and win. Big payout!

While playing my Allwin machine this evening I noticed two pins between the ball pockets on the right side that are much shorter than the rest, and I'm not sure if this is the way the machine is supposed to look, or if they were cut in an attempt to make the machine easier to play. The tips of these pins are sheared off "clean" and do not appear to have been cut with a pair of clippers.

I know we have some members who are more familiar with these machines than I am, so I am hoping they could shed some light on this area.

Thanks in advance for any help you could provide!

I don't see how that would make it easier to win. The ball will go into the lose slot just as easy. Watching your video it went into the lose more than the win.

After playing a while do you think it is too easy?

I actually think it is more difficult to get a win with the pins removed (and the ball track cleaned [less drag]). That is why I am hoping that our friends across the pond can tell me if this is part of the design, or an attempt by someone to make the wins easier to get.

Without the pins it's less likely to bounce over far enough to get to the left most pockets

That's interesting, I have never noticed that before when playing Allwins, but then again it's not something I have been looking for,

Not sure when I will be able to get to the Old Penny Museum at Bridlington, but next time I am there, I will make a point of checking it out

In the meantime I will keep an eye on eBay listings and see if there are any close up pics of this area on other Allwins

Here's a link to a Site that contain lots of info on Allwins and there is also an Email link, so that could be a way to find out for sure??

WOW!! That is a beautiful machine!! I hope mine looks that good when I complete the restoration!!

As for the pins... Thanks for the link Derek!! I guess they were cut. Someone really did a clean job of cutting them. Maybe I can replace them with some nails that are the same size and trim the heads off with a Dremmel. It is pretty hard to get a win now, so I would hope that adding the pins back would make the game a little more fun.
