Default 1940's matuya is up and running

well, the packages made it from the east coast, no damage, and I just cleaned the first one up.

the rusty top tray is the problem area on this one. I was worried about sanding off all the rust and making the metal too thin. for now, I steel wooled and wiped it down well. I am considering painting over with the oxidizing paint to seal and rust proof it.

there were several areas where the sheet metal was squashed, so I gently straightened these out. one chute was binding on a return arm.

jackpot output utilizes a seesaw at the top. this drains onto a second lever and pours through the "15" showing though the front.

unlike previous machines I have seen, this one does not store the balls in the half round chutes around the 15, but they pour through with each jackpot. only when I get a jam do they stay in the window.

there is a jackpot regulator seesaw in the lower left, just like our newer vintages, complete with rusty ball to tip.

the cell is in amazingly good shape. it's like a heavy vinyl sheet that has a few bubbled areas, but nothing that shows. only a small crack in the lower left. I lightly used 409 dampened cloth to clean.

the cast aluminum tray polished up nicely, the shooter works, and the tray empty chute has a spring loaded switch, like later models.

the glass actually slid through a slot in the top once I loosened the screws on the front. I suppose they had a angled cut glass, since the upper tray is higher on the left than the right. it works fine with the window open at the bottom, but I will probably slip a piece of wood or tinted plastic in the gap.

only thing left is to lightly sand the wood and oil it.

it's amazing that this 60 year old pachinko is in such good shape.

will post a quick video when youtube's working for me (getting error messages today after tried upload).

    Wow...Awesome find.

Try Evapo-Rust on rusty pieces and it eliminates rust. The stuff is amazing. I found it at Harbor Freight Tools. Price isnt bad. There's got to be one of those strores near you.
You need to soak your items in that stuff overnight. You will be amazed the next day.

OK. finally the video is up. it took me more than 6 tries, as I think my 3G upload speed is very slow here... over an hour for 2 1/2 minutes of video, and I lost my connection on several attempts. also, my camera shoots .avi files, and I stiched them together with some quickie program that had an incompatible file type with youtube... so then, I had to get my old computer brought from berkeley to salinas and use iMovie to convert from .avi to quicktime... sometimes these different file types drive me nuts!

p.s. is it my imagination, or do the older machines have better sounding bells... like better metal and a clearer tone?

You can't beat the vintage bell on these machines and i think there is a youtube movie excerpt on that model

Thanks for posting that video - it's interesting to see how the machines evolved from there. The basic mechanisms work on the same principals, but are much simpler.

You can see the beginnings of the jackpot mechanism, and I like that you can see the payout through the front of the machine around the centerpiece, that's a nice touch.

    Very cool.

    Mud,

I couldn't agree with you more on that statement!! I very much prefer the older Pachinko machines to the newer models simply because of the sounds they make with the balls bouncing through all of the tin pathways, and the different tone the bells have. To me, it's much more fun. I now have five vintage machines in my personal collection, but the one I play the most is my early 1950's Nishijin Single Shot because it sounds the best when I score a jackpot.

yep thats a nice machine... i really like the front upper win tray. the way the balls track through that narrow channel.. looks like they gt cauche up a bit but who cares.. the styling of it is great..

    nice vid thanks

on another note i think its odd.. your machine appers to be older then my single shot.. for some reason i asumend yours was a single shot ???

Gorgeous machine! I put the year at 1953. The Masamura Gauge wasn't an industry standard until after 1951. The first renpatsu-shiki (successive shots) pachinkos came out in 1953 and were outlawed by the end of the year. So that's a pretty rare machine you've got. Congratulations.

hey mopar, I thought it odd that this one had multishot, too. there was some mention of multishots getting outlawed at some point, maybe this was one?

sharmoni, the guy I bought it from is certain that his father in law came back before 1950, so maybe that masamura gauge year isn't a firm date? or maybe they were trying it out before it became official? I saw one on YJA, also, that was dated 40's of this style.

no matter. we know it's pretty old and "special"

thanks for the comments on the vid. it was a major chore uploading. next time I will use the video camera, not the still camera in "video" mode.

Did a little more research. Masamura invented his gauge pattern in 1948. And we've seen many pachinkos that were ahead of their time as far as mechanics. I think yours must be one of those. Even more rare!

Somebody fire off an email and picture to that Pachinko Museum in Japan, perhaps he'd know

Try it in english, otherwise send it off to Kia and see if he'll forward it in Japanese?
