u cant really u have to sand cross grain... when im in a cross grain i sand in ovel patern... the ovel being with the grain of the larger piece of wood.. u will end up with cross grain marks no matter what but that is solved with question 2

i always start with 80 grit paper (on a palm sander) then step up to 120,180,220, and finish with 320.. usualy anything past that is not worth the effort for me... your results will verry...

(the important thing about sanding is dont be cheep with the paper.. replace it as needed.. and dont skip up in grit to fast.. u cant sand out 80 grit marks with 320 paper..)

im into mopar's your into electric cars.. some one around hear probably likes phord's and shivy's (lord know's why).. but now i digress.. appropriate, authentic??? parlors left them natural...
I like a good Laquer finish.. high shine easy to clean and gives the wood a nice old school hue... the last two i build i tryed a new water base... great cause the weather has turn cool.. dried fast and little to no voc...

the finish im going to leave to ya Doc ..

    hope this helped

If you can sand before assembly this is best. If not.. use medium fine on areas with no 'cross grain' points and fine or extra fine where there its. You can also used a 'palm sander' that works with mini vibrations and a fine grit and have no problems and the sanding will go faster.

I've had to replace a couple of boards on mine machines. However, since I mount all of mine inside of cabinets, the frame doesn't show so I am not particular about the wood or getting the finish right. On most of my machines the frame is 'rough cut' wood with very little if any finishing done. So authentic??? no finishing on the frame except where it might show out the front of the mounting cabinet.

IMHO of course ( and let's not get into THAT discussion again! )

    Hope this helps
