Default Has anyone ever re-mounted a vintage bell?

    Hey all,

The only 'broken' part on the Sophia B that I am fixing up is the second bell:

The post that the bell is mounted on is broken, and the bell just sits at the bottom of the plastic housing. Normally this would be no big deal, but there is a window cut-out in the housing for the sound to resonate, and since the bell is lower, some of the balls will fall out of the side.

Yea, I could just tape it, and forget about it - but I was thinking of cutting the housing in half (it's glued) and remounting the bell with a simple bolt and nut...

Anyone ever had to do that?

    Thanks,

    Matt!

    Matt,

You will want to make sure that the bell is screwed to a post of some sort and that the edges are not touching anything. Otherwise the bell will not ring; the balls would instead make a "tink" "tink" sound as they hit the metal.

That being said, how badly is the mounting post broken? Would it make sense to replace the entire plastic assembly from a parts machine, or try to separate the glued seams and fashion a new post for the bell to attach to?

Just a few thoughts I had. Perhaps someone on this site has a 'B' series parts machine with the same back assembly and could provide you with the part you need.

    Jeff,

I have not opened it yet - so I don't know where the post is broken off at. However, as long as I isolate the new post (use rubber washers on the bolt) and make sure that the bell floats in the housing, it should be cool...

I'll keep you posted (pun intended).

You shouldn't need to cut the housing at all to get to the bell. I'm presuming your dismantling the machine and giving it a good cleaning. If so when you have that part removed from the back you can easily access the bell and rebuild it or mount it however you would like.

    chmer,

Yea, when I had it all apart, that portion should have split apart like everything else; however, the seams around that housing were superglued. I didn't want to mess with it at that moment, so I put it back together.

Once I get it all cleaned up, I may go back and play again...
