i think the "smart ball" game mentioned above refers to those large, almost pinball cabinet sized machines. the balls look to be 3 or 4X the diameter of a pachinko ball.

Yes, and this makes more sense. Smartball balls would be traceable (they are far larger, white, and easily marked, and there are far fewer of them), and could easily be found by the operator as the Smartball machines were in small banks, often only 2 rows long with perhaps 20 machines each (as compared to larger pachinko halls with literally hundreds of machines in rows).

But, he does seem to be talking about the regular pachinko balls in his early posts. Indeed, private messages between us last year were all about the regular balls.
There is always another machine around the corner...

Lucky engraved Pachinko balls | eBay

How nice you remember. I got these last saturday 09/10. But in end of 2009 a pachitalk friend from USA send the "lucky" ball for free. I just pay the ship cost. That I got in end of 2009 still the best quality. It had "minimalistic" difference. In that same time I got the same pachinko ball with a ebay seller(But he wasn't a pachinko seller). During middle 2010 A seller from arizona sell a set of lucky balls. It was different "lucky" pachinko balls. He broke the pachinko machine ebay list and ship to me.

I got someanother "lucky" pachinko balls during april/may 2011 from a japan seller.

I saw these too on ebay. I have bought some flags from this seller at great prices but he now seems to have lost his mind and is trying to sell single balls at $15 to $25 each.

Yes I will kinda have to agree with you there. Then again I don't really care what they say as long as they are round metal spheres that are the right size and aren't rusty.

Don't know if anyone cares but I found this on ebay today.

To me it seems like this guy might be engraving these balls himself which means that they probably hae never been in a parlor.

Both balls were founded. Almost everything that someone look for, can be found. But I'm not collecting pachinko balls anymore, only occasionally.
