Default Nishijin Sophia Vintage ID Assistance...

    Hey all,

I found a local person with a Vintage Nishijin Sophia Series. I was looking for a bit of help with the ID.

She said that it says " 75780" on the front, if that helps... I also see that it says "Deluxe Super."

I also just noticed that it has 2 jackpot seesaws - I'll have to see if that Makes it an A series or a B series - I'm still learning./..

    Here are the pics:

I tolder her $40 for decent condition and a good amount of balls, and the price would go down depending...

So, any ideas on this machine? Anyone have it?

Also, when looking at the front, the colored plastic on the right side - is that supposed to light up?

I'll wait to respond to her until I hear back from you "experts"...

    Thanks in advance -

    Matt!

the metal trim looks to be in good condition, with no rust, overall it looks to be in decent condition.

$40.00 or less is a good price

I think it's a Model B, it has 'Sophia' written on the back and strangely enough I was actually looking at one today!!

Same model, though different cell, a Nishijin Super Deluxe!!

The one you have shown looks to be in good condition!!

the one I was looking at was very much the worse for wear, broken plexi, dirty, and lots of pitting on the metal parts...

That is a 'B' series machine, probably built between 1974 and 1976 based on like models that I have restored. The plastic decoration to the right of the play field is not wired for lights, but it wouldn't be too difficult to add some. (I think Mudfud did that in an earlier thread)

I personally would pay up to $45 for such a machine based on condition. The cell doesn't look stained or discolored in the photos you posted, but I would check more closely when seeing it in person. I do notice that the removable ball path guide that attaches to the ball path just above the jackpot payout mechanisim is missing. Not too big of a deal - many on this site (including yours truly) have posted photos of custom creations to keep the balls in the track. This part is missing on about half of the machines I work on.

    Good luck!

Thanks for all teh help so far... I am picking this up tomorrow for $30 - unless you think it's worth less. Here are a bunch more pics:

I wonder if those are a few rust spots on the front?

    Thanks again...

    well worth $30

    nice find.

jeff's correct that I was thinking about adding those lights, where the plastic holders are, but never got around to it. you could use LEDs and put much smaller holes than a lamp bulb.

looks like a nice machine.. i see loose balls roling around in the back of it.. and the payout arm has a few balls stacket up in it as well..

30 bucks is a good price dosnt look like the cell has waterdamage

    nice find

u jwill need to fab the cover that jacksje4 was talking about .. but as stated that piece is often missing.. i have used aluminum flat stock and a piece of foam to hold it into place.. the flat stock bends easy and the foam to hold it in place..

Overall, I think you are getting a great deal for $30!! The cell is in great shape and it looks to be a mostly complete machine. You can quickly and easily remove the rust from the chrome with some #00 steel wool from any hardware store.

    Enjoy you addiction!!

the ball cover on the track can be made from lots of things. if you want authentic, vintage pachinko sells some for $25 or the real one for $50

here are some things that I have done... tongue blades, paint stirrers, ballpoint pen springs, and various scraps. jeff used a piece of acrylic. mopar used a piece of aluminum.

    Hey all,

Thanks for the info Guys... Thanks for the pics, Mud...

I'll fashion something, and let you know.

I picked the machine up yesterday. The frame needed to be stablized, and there was some moisture staining under the cell near some of the nails (and a few ciggy burns in the front tray - hah).

So, ended up getting it for $15 - not too bad. I liked it because there were some cool things on the playfield, and the center jackpot lights up!

I took about 3 hours last night completely stripped everything off of the back - cleaned it all, and lubed the metal parts. I got about 1/3 of it all back together, but had to stop for the evening.

I figure another hour to put the stuff back on, and then a good clean and polish on the front.

Then i'll clean up the wiring...and eventually build a cabinet.

The hard part is pretty much over...

    Later,

    Matt!

BE CAREFUL!! There really aren't any parts on a pachi that should be lubricated. You can attract dust and grime if you use a lubrication and it gets tracked on the balls and distributed through the machine. I have worked on machines where the previous owner used WD-40 or some other type of lubricant to make the machine work, and the grime caked to the ball paths was excessive!!

When a machine has been cleaned properly and all metal axels and pivot rods are polished and clean, the machine will operate for many years as if it has been lubricated.

    Just some (hopefully) helpful advice!

btw - great deal for $15!!! You scored.

    Jack,

    Thanks for the reminder..

I was careful, however, I didn't want to remove and polish all joints this time. I added one drop of machining oil (made for small moving parts, hinges, etc) on several different pivot points.

I wiped up any excess after working the pivot joint many time - and only lubed the joints that DID NOT have a ball track, or ball reservoir beneath it - to be extra sure...

    Thanks,

    Matt!

    Hi Jeff,
You were close on the year build but it is closer to 1972-73 layout looking at the lower back of the machine. The 1974-1976 models did not go all the way to the bottom board and have that metal strip along the entire bottom of the frame and door.

    Matt,
Great buy, I've paid more in shipping for machines that weren't in nearly as good condition as the one you got.

Red face Re: Nishijin Sophia Vintage ID Assistance...

The back of the 1972 units looked like the first picture. I circled the metal strip I was talking about. I think it's called a threshold. The second picture is of a 1974-1976 model notice that the threshold is higher up and is made of plastic. There are other ways to tell the age from some of his other posts. The ball hopper empty flag design is one of them along with the color and design of the front ball try. I've seen so many machines without there licencing tags that I have gotten real good identifying the years for Nishijin type B models.

Wow, thank you. I never thought about creating a post with all the info I know about styles vs year for the Nishijin 'B' machines. Almost everything I know I learned from hear in bits and pieces. Let me think it over and see what I can do.
