Default Bought for the balls - needs TLC

This has to be the most disgustingly dirty machine I've ever bought. I bought it basically because at a cost of $20 I got over 500 balls with it and it works. I figured that it was worth it at that price just to get the balls. So it is now the third project in line to try and resurrect.

I thought the blemishes were mold but at closer look it appears to be just some kind of black crusty junk. The back is dusty and with the exception of some jury rigged weight (a dime) attached on a lever near the see-saw looks to be all there.

So this makes me want to ask everyone what their most sorry looking machine was and how bad was it before restoration?

You know that doesn't actually look too bad!!

Looks like it's mostly in need of a good cleaning

I do like the cell, and especially the fact it has a stylised 'pachinko' written on it too

I think it's a great find, especially so at that price and I do hope you get chance to clean / restore it

btw I'd love to see a close up of the cell and especially the centrepiece

That is a really nice design, and not the worst I have seen (both in person or on this site). While it is disgusting, it will also become the most rewarding to clean up and restore. I personally like restoring the dirtiest Pachi's because when you are done you can sit back and really see the difference you made in that poor Pachi's life.

I echo Hanabi's comments - please post close-up photos of the cell.

I think that machine looks GREAT!

I have picked up machines with much more dirt (one had manure in some of the lower areas... came from a farm, I guess). and, that cell looks clean!

my first sanyo has a weight hanging from the same place, that I added before I figured out how to get inside and really clean that axle.

try a little 409, or the purple power cleaner found at the auto stores, and I'll bet the black stuff comes right off.

your chrome looks good, too. a little 00 steel wool and never dull, and it will look like new.

I say that was a deal!

Thanks everyone for all the comments and tips on cleaning this machine up.

Hanabi, just because you asked I've attached a couple of photos of the centrepiece. Do you think they are beavers? Otters?, or other critter? I was guessing beavers based on the size of the tail.

Also attached is a pic of the labels and I want some input on this from anyone before I proceed... I was contemplating trying to remove the paper label that is obscuring the peach coloured label below it hoping to see if there is a date on it. However the paper label appears to be very dry and brittle. Would it be bad form to possibly destroy the paper label to get a peek underneath? What say all? Am I being anal wanting to keep the machine in its original form?

I'm not sure what they are, but I think they are in love!!

Lots of love hearts and I'm pretty sure they are winking at each other!!

I love seeing all the different centre pieces out there, not seen this one before, so thanks for the super clear close-ups

as for the label, I'm not sure I would remove it myself, but then I have never needed to...

Hopefully some of the more experienced restorers can offer advice on that

If it were my machine, I would try to lightly (and carefully) moisten the paper label to remove it in one piece, then reattach it on the back somewhere. You could also try using something wide and flat to get under it and gently lift it up and off.

on the label, if you try to remove it, you may find crumbs in your hand. that's what happened to me when I tried removing a label on a 50's single shot.

I would leave it, to have it be more authentic. maybe clean gently around it and stick the corners down with paper glue.

Because of the lack of teeth showing, I'd say they're otters, like lucky said, bride and groom

Update: Started to do a little cleaning up on this machine ahead of schedule because whatever is splattered all over and under is too disgusting looking to leave until later. I'm not sure what this stuff is but its not greasy or oily and to be honest it looks like dried "diaper discharge" yuk!!!

It is coming off, but not easily. Had to buy some rubber gloves, couldn't find ShockSystem blues however and had to settle for green ones.

Looking at the picture it needs work but is still very savable. Like others hear I've seen machines in way worse shape.

Digital's Muskrat Love comment made me wonder since it would make so much sense, but after a side by side comparison, they are definitely otters!!
