We are still managing to get out Beach detecting about once a week, usual finds, nothing out of the ordinary, but we live in hope in the meantime it's fun, if a little cold

...and then there were three, 3 detectors that is!!

a few weeks ago we added to our collection of Metal Detectors with another well researched and recommended model, it's a White's DFX and has a meter / display which shows icons to reflect what it thinks it has detected (ring, coin, etc) and also can suggest the depth of the item it has found, and lots of other information, it came with 3 different search coils / heads

I haven't had chance to try it myself yet, as I am still very happy with my Laser B3, so far I have been more than matching anything the more expensive new fangled detectors can find

and just a quick pic of some finds,

and last pic shows one of my birthday pressies, yes it's a Sand Scoop to assist with my beach detecting, NOT a spoon for my cake

Unfortunately we only have Beaches to detect on at the moment, in England every piece of land belongs to someone and so you need to obtain proper permission from land owners to detect...

Even for the beach I had to apply for a Permit to detect on 'Crown Estate Foreshore' thankfully it was just an online registration and they email you a permit

But it's best to do things correctly, just in case we find something really old or valuable, and even then it could come under Treasure Trove laws, where ownership and value are determined by others, and could take many months to decide an outcome

We are hoping to persuade someone to let us detect on their land, farmland nearby would be great, and we are responsible detectorists, always leave sites as we found them, no litter, damage etc etc

But in the meantime, it's Beaches for us, they are interesting as you never know what you will find, the finds change with the seasons, the tides and the wind direction, we must be the only people looking out for a nice storm along the north east coast

We were out detecting again at the weekend, Scarborough seems to be best for finds at the moment. We found the usual modern British coinage in various states from spendable to very rusty!!

However, my daughter found a coin that looks to be our oldest one yet

At first she thought it was a metal washer (we seem to find lots of those) but she noticed it had a square hole in the centre and on closer examination it looked to have symbols on both sides, so she dashed over to show me and I agreed that it did seem to have what looked like Chinese symbols on it

So I did a little internet research, Google is my friend!! and found a great site that helps you narrow down your coin find, it looks like our coin is Chinese and dates between 1723-1735!!

The side with the 4 symbols describes the Emperor (Shih Tsung) and the 2 symbol side is the 'mint'

My father thinks it must have come from a ship, possibly a wreck, Scarborough coastline is littered with old shipwrecks

Although not worth much in the monetary sense, this little coin is priceless to us and a source of pride for my daughter

Well it's been a while since the last post, but we have all been out Beach Detecting most weekends...

A few weeks back we found a nice Gold Wedding Band, it was a lucky find at Scarborough

The whole family had been detecting on the beach, but it was a really cold day and we weren't finding much, so my daughter and myself switched our detectors off and decided to head back to the car, Darren decided to join us but left his detector switched on as we walked back across the beach in the direction of the car,

Suddenly he got a good clear signal and decided to dig it, my daughter and I were grumbling, we were cold and miserable and just wanted to get off the beach, but we soon had smiles as the find turned out to be our first Gold!!
It was a man’s gold wedding band, 9k gold, and after a little wiping to get the sand off, it looked good as new!!

A few days later we found the silver coloured ring, looks like costume jewellery in the style of an engagement ring, and has small white stones set on the shoulders with a large pinky lilac stone in the centre

We've found all sorts of things lately...

Lots of cutlery, even a salad server

The grey pottery shown in the pic with the salad server is most likely medieval, we found that at Fraisthorpe, where we had been told a stream or spring was coming out onto the beach and sometimes brought some finds from a Medieval village, we spoke to a man from London that was there looking specifically for the grey pottery, and Ellie soon managed to find a couple of pieces for herself

In the other pot, (yes it's a coin / token cup from one of the seafront amusement arcades) there is a brass door knob and what looks like a rusty pachinko ball, I found that one myself on Scarborough beach, I think it's Allwin sized

Speaking of Allwins, we have also been adding to our Old Penny collection too, we seem to still be finding these...
