I have to admit that I did not take down the whole shelf mechanism and parts. it freely moves, though, so if it's a wear problem, maybe there's a worn part that is eccentric or something.

here are the 4 variations of weights so far. I am hoping that the last one, 2 pachinko balls, GOOP and gaffing tape, will do the trick. the other variations worked with the cover off, then got caught and messed everything up again...

some day the pachinko archeologists are going to open this one up and say WTF?

at least the lights work now!

jeff - you are welcome to play the hokoku anytime. let me know when you are in the SF bay area.

I still think some collars would look more 'factory', although a light spring in that single hole on the payout shelf would look/work well too.

hey compirate. I like the metal collar idea, but there is no clearance between the rod and the plastic cover to accommodate one. (suppose I could cut a collar to made a C shaped weight, if I did it just right)

a spring was going to be my next plan, though finding the right place to hook it and the right spring coefficient to not impede the shelf drop, was going to be a bunch more trial and error.

the gooped pachinko balls are a little tacky , but they are well hidden under the yellow cover.

I thought that maybe there are some lead fishing weights available that could clamp on, too, but I was trying not to make another trip to the store today.

maybe this shelf idea didn't work out so well, since we don't see it very often.

btw, the YJA hokoku's are still there, one has dropped to a starting price of about $200.

I see the covers are all pretty close to the rod. If no place for a spring at the top, you could always put it down at the bottom of the rod.

my idea as well... u could use either a pull spring on the lower section or a push spring from the top down

a light spring, in tension, hooked at the bottom might work, as long as it doesn't interfere with the pivoting motion of the rod out of the notch.

all this re-engineering... I wonder how long it took the vintage pachinko engineers to design, test, and debug the machines before they hit the parlors.

what about a ball point pen spring in the pic attached to this post?

use a finish nails or a reg nail with the head cut off.. drive it in.. bend it down and slide the spring over the nail.. u could start high and strech the spring out if more tention was needed??

    jsut an idea

I have a 1952 Hokoku 2FRIKI and it has the same payout shelf. I think it looks like the coin op billiards ball return. Mine is sticking right now also. It is on my list of chores to attend to some time.

wow, mike, can you post pix of your 1952 machine?

mopar - GREAT idea on using a ballpoint spring. I even have lots of those sitting around. the GOOPed pachinko balls are working well now, but a little spring would look SOO much more professional.

I'll go get the detailed video of the hokoku edited, in case anyone really wants to see all the workings of this one.

I unburied the 2 friki, now I might as well fix it. Thank you for the help getting motivated to look at this guy again. I think it is a neat old machine and it is really pretty fun to play. it is a single ball in play type with a shooter hopper, auto load. It has a cool looking gun shaped casting.

The pics were a little dark, so I hope you don't mind that I lightened them up a little here

Thank you for sharing, it's great to have pics and details of such a rare model, and probably the nearest most of us will get to one

owennewton said he had a nishijin B with double lights.

I suppose it wouldn't be hard to wire a second micro switch or leaf switch and some bulbs to the empty plastic covers often present on B's

wonder if his was stock? I have never seen a B with double jackpot lights.

I am finally going to do the detailing now. the chrome (going to try the aluminum foil trick after the 00 steel wool), the pins (brasso and scotchgard pad today), and plastic (honda motorcycle pollish?)

thanks for the support and suggestions on this one. I think it's one of my top 3 favorites now.

OK. the final pix. I know it's not as clean as eddie's or jeff's, but I'm trying.

the steel wool was amazing. I'm going to post a thread just on that.

the last bit of detailing will either be sharpie's or fine brushes with model paint. there are a lot of little colored flakes coming off the plastic pieces, so this could be a whole afternoon of painting some day.

also, digital is helping me out with some decal scraps to see if I can make a suitable water stain covering. will post if it works.

rusty, i uploaded the sticker for you, too. i don't see any of those date numbers like on some of them (the ones in the 40s to 50s)

    Chewy,

I just posted pics of a Nishijin B with two jackpot switches. There is one above the "see saw" on the left side. Nice work on your machine and your pachinko wall.
