Default start of chewy's wall of vintage pachinkos

    hi guys.

I finally got started on the wall of pachinko in my garage in salinas

here's the pix of the first shelf. I allowed enough room to have 4 machines under the top 4, and there's room to go another 8 feet to the right... that's a total space for 16 pachinkos... yippee!

I figured I could swap the bottom and top ones when I feel like playing them.

maybe I can get the wall to look like that museum in tokyo someday

p.s. I think the people that lived here before me were kansas city chiefs fans? is that right on the colors?

    Looks great so far.

My guess would be the 49ers for that area. The colors aren't exact, but for some people close enough is good enough.

    Also,

Mud, make sure that there won't be any grease dripping from the garage door track above the machines (it look like it extends over them in the pic).

Looks awesome! I can't wait to see the progress...

    Later,

    Matt!

I wouldn't trust 6 angle brackets to hold 4 machines even thought they are much lighter than newer pachinkos

    I believe in overbuilding

Another row of pachinkos under them should help hold them up. Continue until the bottom row is on the floor. Never fails!

of course. there are 4 inside the house, two that need a more permanent place than the coffee table (daichi w/extra tulips and comet II with big fish), and another 5 or six that have not been cleaned up yet, in the garage. oh yeah, and one that just arrived in berkeley, the hotoku from oregon... I have a lot of cleaning to do.

matt76 - good point about the garage door rail. I will have to take a second look at that. I don't keep a car in the garage, though (too much stuff), so it doesn't get opened more than once a month. was thinking of putting some kind of dust cover anyhow.

LD and mopar - I tend to over engineer myself. to my calcs this should be enough: 45 x 4 = 180, divide by 6 is 30 pounds per bracket, and each bracket has 3 x 2 inch long screws with at least 2 of each bracket's screws in a stud. ten pounds per screw seems safe.

the brackets themselves are the bent metal ones, but I will almost bet that they are rated for more than 30 pounds if screwed into wood. they look thin, but they don't have any flex at all. mopar - in the picture of your heavy bracket, there are only 3 screws in that bracket, so 8 pachinkos on 2 brackets, over 6 screws, is a lot more weight, like 60 pounds per screw.

I figure I've distributed the weight over the whole wall. I will, however, be checking for loosening or sagging on a regular basis, to be safe.

but, I live in earthquake country, too, so I will have to put a little piece or a cable to the top of each machine, so they don't tip forward.

dattia - good point on niners colors. then I don't have to paint over! they also match in and out burger, and I am a big fan of that place.

it's nice to finally get to displaying the pachinkos. they've been stacking up like firewood...

keep in mind that a screw fully instaled has a shear strenght of over 1600 lbs... i think lucky is refering to the quality of bracket.. that was my point at least.. i would not worry about the screws u used.. its the brackets.. the brackets i used have a kicker from the shelf to the wall.. there also at least 1/16"+ thick steel...

    jsut my 2 cents

jsut worried u might have to post later about an insendent

The weight also doesn't seem to be on the edge of the shelf. That makes a big difference, it looks like the weight is pushed closer to the wall. With that and the cable holding the top it looks good.

If it starts to sag the cable will hold it for a while and by then you would see the problem.
Because nobody can leave their machines for that long of a time.

the wall is growing. here's the first half with 8 machines.

I tied a wire to the side of each machine, so they won't tip forward. I looped them so I could get the wire off easy for

covered up the vent hole at the bottom row. my garage is pretty airy already.

now, to decide if I want them all loaded and ready to go (once they're cleaned, of course), or just load the top row, or load a couple at a time

next, back to berkeley to open the hotaku from oregon.

p.s. could a moderator rotate picture 1 and 4... I down sized them and they still rotated on me. thx sorted

Are the brackets on the top only (on the lower shelf) ?

yeah, good eye, digital, there are only 2 brackets b/c there is a 5 inch deep carpeted concrete ledge that the board is sitting on top of. the brackets are there just to keep the board from flipping down. the weight is on the concrete underneath.

thanks for asking. two brackets in that position would not have held those machines, for sure.

To protect from garagedoor drippings you could hang Pachinko flags or banners over the machines.

hmmm. I would be afraid of ruining my pachinko banners. maybe I can use my old motorcycle or car cover, both for dust and for grease (though i don't use that garage door much).

now I'm motivated to actually start deep cleaning some of the machines.

I plan to put another 8 foot shelf to the right, and try to stop at 12 vintages

of course, that doesn't include the 5 here in berkeley, either...
