Default My Monkey Wont Climb the Coconut Tree...

If that title didnt peak your curiosity, nothing will!

I just picked up a working nishijin vintage. Very nice theme. I am sure that I saw someone up here with the same machine.

The center piece appears to work using a counter balance. You must land two balls into the center piece. The first one the monkey catches, and the second causes the monkey to slide down the tree and drop the balls into the alligator.

My monkey does not climb back up the tree. I assume that a good cleaning will fix this. But before I do, I would like to know if anyone has any words of wisdom.

Of course the obvious... Dont get the playfield wet.

    Thanks

Does the monkey seem springy? Perhaps a third ball is necessary to make him spring back up?

The last time my monkey dealt with a set of teeth like that, it had trouble getting back into action as well. Maybe the monkey and the coconuts aren't the problem.

I would use some GelGloss polish on a Qtip to polish the path and surfaces that the monkey runs on. it cleans great and makes the plastics a little slippery. I used it to clean my first restoration and it works a treat.
It can be found at home depot cheapest I have found, usually in a large display of its own. Look for the pink cans and blue label.

I dont work for them Its just great stuff for cleaning most all of a pachinko.

If someone knows of better please share.

    btw...Great looking machine.

What tulips does the monkey payoff open(or close?)

Top-Right or Left(sometiome Both?) then Bottom?

I have not seen that center action before. One more for the list.

    Good Luck!

Ok... avoiding the cocoNuts and spanking monkey jokes... cause someone beat me to it... here's my sugggestion.

I have a 'Monkey Machine' that has the aligator type pocket. Although my monkey doesn't climb the tree, the aligator had/has issues with opening and closing properly.

    Here's my suggestion.

    1) Let's see the back. I'm guessing you have a Nishijin Type C which, if like mine, will make getting to the center piece very easy. Simply find the 5 or 6 'snap clips' that hold the mechanic on the back and unsnap them and the 90% of the stuff comes off in one big component exposing the back of the center piece.
    2) Removal of the center piece is rather simple once the back is off as long as the screws that hold it to the face are not already stripped. Just make sure you have the right sized phillips head screw driver.
    3) I may be that the monkey is supposed to operate on one ball and not two. I'm just guessing here and not discounting what you say, it's just that with two caught that would sometimes mess up the subsequent processes. Also, imagine the frustration of your customer who's "last ball" was caught and he got no pay out. I would investigate this farther.
    4) When I took my monkey center piece out, some components could not be removed because they were glued. However, I was able to gain access to all the 'swivel' connections and discovered they ALL had corrosion and thus did not operate smooth as required. The only way I could have seen this was to tear it down. I used emory cloth to 'shine up' the metal componentes.
    5) Keep in mind that these 'fancy centers' on the vintage mechanical machines were very delicately balanced in order to function properly. A little wear and a little corrosion and that balance is totally negated. In order to get my aligator to close as it should I had to attached a weight to help it. I had to try several different things of various weights until I found one that consistantly operated as it should.

So, I guess what I am saying is, it might be easier to work on that it first appears and you will (most likely) be much better off to go ahead and attack the problem. See my other threads on the 7 Dwarfs and Monkey Machine for more info on the Type C mechanical removals.

Really cool machine by the way! Good luck!

Unless I am mistaken, there are a couple of folks (at least) that have this same design...If you haven't figured it out yet, peruse the picture galleries and see who has that machine...PM them with questions...that's what I'd do...

Neat design...of all the vintage machines, those Nishijin B's have my favorite cells...

    Best of luck.

    one of my favorates

give him a good cleansing and a light polish and he should be good to go...

if i rember right a few years back i did a quick cleaning and repair to the same machine and his was really nice and only needed one ball to slid down and drop

    Nice machine Johnny

    Monkey Aligator model B.
My string is broken and I don't know how to bigin to attack getting to the area in center where it "lives". ("lived")
I have a Monkey Aligator model B. It seems the monkey may be held in up position by a weighted string over a pully and when ball goes in upper center pocket it lands on the monkey's head, pushes him down where when the monkey ia st the bottom in the open mouth of the aligator the ball rolls off the monkey's head into the aligator's mouth, releasing weight from monkey allowing him to "climb"the palm just as the ball causes the jaws to close just missing monkey's butt as it pushes down to roll to the payoff ramp. Pa Chinko.
Help me if you can. Thanks!

I have the same monkey & alligator machine. One ball makes the monkey slide down and the alligator snaps at the monkey. He slides back up the tree and the machine pays out...so something is amiss if it takes two balls. I'm not sure what causes this action but I agree with carefully taking off the back of the center payout and have a look see and cleaning while you investigate. I wouldn't recommend spanking your monkey as others have suggested...you will go blind.
