Default Glass vs Plexiglass opinions needed.

I have a 93 Stellar Sankyo machine. I have had it for over 12 years and I have just been told / noticed that it only has one sheet of plexiglass in it...when it should have two.

Did these machines originally have glass or plexiglass sheets in them? I have one sheet of plexi in mine, but I was actually thinking about getting a sheet of glass to go along with it. I figure if glass was originally used...then I could keep the glass on the inside sheet and plexi on the outside...but if I wanted to quiet the machine down I could put the plexi on the inside and the glass on the outside.

If the machine originally used plexi for both layers...I would probably go plexi on both. If I do get glass...does it need to be a certain kind of glass (tempered)?

    TIA,

    DugFreez

I use regular glass in my machines. The same kind you would use in house windows. My last machine needed both panes, and at my local hardware store they cost me under $4.00 each. I like glass better because it's clearer, and has a nice shine to it that plexi doesn't have. Also, plexi will yellow and get brittle over time, and it costs more.

Glass, always. Double thick if possible.

Machines originally had 2 pieces of glass, but its all personal preference on whether or not you use 1 or 2, plexi or glass or both..members here have used all combos with success!!

More recent machines don't use the square sheets anymore so you have less options!!

I'll probably go with the one plexi (that I have now) and one glass. Unless the glass is dirt cheap...then I'll prob pick up two.

I kinda like the idea of one glass and one plexi. As I said before I could put the plexi inside if I wanted it quieter or the glass inside if I want to make some noise.

I agree that it is personal preference. I purchase all my glass from Lowes and have them cut it for me. Generally this cost me about $25 per machine for one sheet of plexi that I put on the inside and one piece of glass that I put on the outside.

While some like the sound of the balls against the glass, to me that sound (metal against glass) get's on my nerves so I use the plexi. To me the machines are loud enough with out adding to it. And, if you have more the 2 playing at the same time, it can be REALLY loud. Just my opinion of course!

I do the same thing plexi on the inside and glass on the outside. I tried two pieces of glass and was always afraid the inside sheet would break every time I heard a ball hit it hard.

Bringing back and old thread... I ended up and got 2 sheets of glass but I'm not sure if I got it thick enough or not. What I bought is 1/16th thick I think.

It seems like the glass rattles around in the door frame a lot. How thick should the glass in this machine be?

    Thanks

    shimming works well.

one of my vintages came shipped with 2 sheets of new plexi, and window weatherstripping to keep the sheets from rattling (the grey beaded stuff you push in next to the glass)

you could probably get by with a few blobs of putty (plumber's, glazing, silly) in the corners.

I took one sheet out b/c I find it too dark with 2 plexi sheets.

maybe I'm cheap, too, b/c I have a single sheet of plexi or glass in all my machines. but, it looks clearer to me.

also, it leaves me the outside frame edge to grab when I open the front door.

I'll probably just order new glass. The last 2 sheets were only $5...so I can spring for 2 more sheets of thicker glass.

From the label off a Nishijin 'C' model

    406 x 406 x 3t = 15.98" square I'm assuming () the 3T is 3mm Tempered - 0.118", .125 (1/8") is close enough

    *gasp*

If you're off by 0.007 of an inch, you'll throw off the balance of the universe, compirate!

Also, I can see this is going to get much more complicated as the newest pachis start making their way to U.S. shores. Did you know one of the latest singer pachis includes a inside double pane of glass which houses translucent plastic beads?

During large chance reaches those beads are spun (with a flywheel) over the screen and cascade down with blue, yellow, or red sidelighting.

Now what measurement will we need for that? ^^

On topic, I prefer plexi for the lack of noise vs. glass.
