Sea Story hits on Monday. There are signs in every palour from here to the Imperial Palace.

Pink Lady is... interesting. Came in last week. Since it's a full price machine (no discount play yet), I just got to watch for a little while.

The middle seems to be about the same chance you'd get in a usual hanemono and the pockets are average as well... but the actual flaps (if you can even call them that... it's more a ramp that's created for a second) are hard as heck to get in. Or at least, it sure seems like it.

Update:

Having gotten a chance to play Pink Lady today, it is now officially my favorite modern hanemono.

The ramps (instead of wings) are incredibly clever and it doesn't take too much to get into the chance or victory area. The music is decent, but the machine stands out for two reasons:


1) Even if you only win a small bonus, like many other modern machines you have the opportunity to get a larger one when that one ends. BUT in addition you have a second challenge game (primarily already decided electronically, but cute nonetheless) which, if you win, will keep the ramp in full open mode for five bonus rounds.


2) While you're pretty much at the mercy of the internal timing system (which will decide for you if you win or lose) the second chance system is a nifty addition to what is usually a one trick pony.


I have yet to see Whirlwind anywhere, but trust me, if I do, I'll go ahead and waste the thousand yen just to try it out. It simply looks too cool to pass up.

P.S. Sea Story is just as annoying as ever.

Whirlwind Verdict:

Well, it hit the 1 yen palours last week and surprised the heck out of me because it usually takes longer than that... Suppose I shouldn't have been that surprised considering that it is, without a doubt, the biggest letdown I have played since Virtual Fighter.

Cute, inventive reaches but ultimately fails to be fun in any way.

On the other hand...

Cyborg 009:

Is one of the most entrancing pachis I've played in a long, long time. Despite the relitive lack of variety in reaches, the normal play and music combine to form an amazingly hypnotic and fun gameplay. Considering that you only win one in 400 spins... that's kind of important!

Two thumbs way up, but because of the lack of variety, it may still not make my purchase list.

Rose of Versailles:

As boring as it's predecessors, sadly. It's one of those machines I really want to root for, but just can't make normal gameplay fun because they refuse to show anything else other than two people passing each other in a ballroom. Reaches shouldn't be once in a lifetime affairs. Players need to feel like they're accomplishing SOMETHING.

The Peach Game:

Forgettable, but fun in the moment. It's one of those I think would be best if you win considering that it's a game which pays out - a lot -. Home players would be hardpressed to keep up with 16 rounds of 13 balls at 9 or 10 count. And then it will continue to win with an 80% or so chance. ^^
