Very sad about those machines - There's a lot that could be done with them! I thought real estate is at a premium in Japan? Odd that a lot that size would go undeveloped.

removing asbestos is very costly, and you have to find workers willing to do it and then have a way to dispose of it.

    maybe send it to China!!!

That was truly painful to watch. It looked like one of those war movie scenes with all of the 'dead soldier' bodies strewn about. So many lifeless pachi's.

    How very sad.

While I admire the pictures taken by these so called "Urban Spelunkers" I must say that it is extremely dangerous affair. No one knows how sound those buildings are after being open to the weather for untold amount of years. Its very possible for one to get seriously hurt or killed doing this. Also, as you mentioned above, the possible exposure to asbestos in these places is high. Also too note that, at least here in the US, its highly Illegal to do this and one could find oneself facing fines, jailtime, or both if caught.

Now that the disclaimer is out of the way...

I did like the video. It did, in fact, sadden me to see all the destroyed Pachi's in there. I do wonder why no one stole some of those. Who knows, perhaps some were.

The most famous abandoned structure that I know of, at least in the US, is the Dixie Square Mall.. Opened in the late 60's and closed in 1979, its still stands to this day, the perfect definition of an urban ruin. The Mall is famous for its appearance in THE BLUES BROTHERS. However, since that time, its been open to the weather, partially torn down, and is about 80 percent standing. However, I would advise against anyone going there, that mall is going to collapse totally at anytime. Parts of the Mall were built with sub-standard practices and materials. Some of the 2nd story parts have indeed already collapsed. The Mall is located in Harvey, IL. This town is almost a ghost town itself, since several business's share the fate of the Dixie Square Mall. Crime was the reason the DSM was closed. And Harvey is rampant with crime from what I have read on the net. There is, in fact, a police station in the parking lot of DSM. There is a good write up and photos of DSM at deadmalls DOT com.

    Just my thoughts,

There's plenty of places like that in Japan, entire amusement parks, resorts and parlors, abandoned. Some look like the people just walked away, one park with souvenirs still in the stores. Inner city is expensive, suburbs cheaper, I guess.

that is sad to see all those pachis laying around.they apparently have no value in japan.if an arcade were to sit abandoned like that here in the u.s.,it would be stripped clean of it's machines very quickly.

I can tell you, as a person living in Japan, that the government is deadly serious about proper recycling and most of the people are as well. The youtube videos are there for a reason... it's "mezurashi" (very rare) to see such things and thus, they are recorded and put on youtube.

Certainly think of them as the exception and not the rule.

Otherwise, someone will have to explain to me and the other 12.5 million people here in Tokyo, why we still have 4 separate garbage pickups that requires us to sort all of our trash and need to pay tariffs for large waste disposal (anything larger than a desk drawer).

Your last statement explains why this exists, think how expensive it would be do dispose of all that. I suppose no one wanted to buy this when it was running, machines in Japan are a dime a dozen (if they were newer, you'd notice the lcd's would be missing). If you look around in the flic, there seems to be a lot open land and only the one road, not much traffic, so I'm not sure this is the Ginza Strip (cause we all know that's where all pachinko and pachislo machines come from! ) Unless some of those machines were in 'storage' (the ones in the huge room), I noticed a couple Sankyo FF frames (the silver ones) so probably closed late 90's.

I DEFINATILY have to agree with Compirate here. I am sure its alot chepaer to just abandon some of these places than have them properly disposed of.

This is indeed the case with the DSM (Dixie Square Mall). During the 1st attempt at demplition, Asbestos was found in the wreckage and because of the high cost of asbestos disposal, the project was halted. The developer could not afford to properly dispose of it. And thats the primary reason (Besides the high crime rate) that no one has developed or torn down the DSM site.

There was also a submarine that I read about that may still be sitting and rotting today. It was de-commissioned by the navy and sold to a private person for scrap. However the asbestos inside the sub's hull prevented the private party from scrapping it and it remained moored where it was. It was used in a film and then abandoned yet again. I am not sure what its fate eventually was. I know in a neigboring city to me, there are no less than 2 schools not being used because of the presence and cost of asbestos and its removal.

Many times property like this get tied up in lawsuits over undisclosed problems or bankruptcy procedings. Many investors won't want to touch the property unless the legal issues can be cleared up cheaply so places like this get tied up in limbo.

Asbestos is a Big Deal with any demolishon project.

I'm currently on site building a new hospital, and the medical building next door was being torn down.

It has taken them almost a month to remove all asbestos from the building by crews wearing hazmat suits.

Lead is another serious problem too.
