What's a rare machine

I think rare is probably not that subjective of a term. Desirable is the subjective term most appear to be discussing. The desirability of a particular machine is something that every collector must ascertain for themselves, whereas the rarity of a machine can be described as a simple function. If one were to catalog all existing machines (or a statistically relevent sample) a determination could be made for the rarity of any specific machine.

Since no such study or statistically relevent sample exists collectors tend to make guesses about rarity based upon their personal experiences, and as such the actual rarity cannot be determined with any certainty. If one were to catalog several thousand ebay sales there could be some reasonable assumptions made as to rarity. But we all can agree in very general terms on some basic assumptions, such as the vast majority of extant vintage machines are 1973 Nishijin B models or 1971 Nishijin A models. The actual percentages are unknown, and thereby a quantifiable rarity eludes us.

Currently it is all just best guess.
