    Default Nails question

I have the cell (why is it called a cell anyway???) cleaned up and notice that my nails appear to have significant wear. Are the nails solid brass or are they just brass-plated? Mine appear to have the brass worn off of most of the nails where the ball travels the most. Am I nuts, or are they simply brass plated?

    Having fun,
    Dave in Des Moines

The nails on all of my machines appear to be solid brass with years of tarnish and who-knows-what attached to them. Try using a cleaner such ar Blue Magic (from AutoZone) or Brasso along with some good old fashioned elbow grease and you should be able to shine them up. If you have trouble cleaning the 'stems', use a wide athletic shoe lace with some of the cleaner on it, but be careful not to get any moisture at the base of the pin where it goes into the cell. That might leave you with the dreaded moisture stains that cannot be fixed!

    Good luck!

IMHO the word Cell might have come from the movie industry.. a snap shot or a picture

webster says "any of various small compartments or bounded areas forming part of a whole." that kinda works for me

    any one else???

Thanks guys, after about a half hour of cleaning, I have the top 4 nails good and clean. My eyes aren't as good as they once were and it appears to be just a build up of junk where I thought there was "missing" brass. After cleaning 4 nails, I know I need to get a fitting for my dremmel and automate this if I plan to do all the nails. For now, I will just try to ignore how nice those 4 nails look compared to all the rest.

I went to buy those cloths and the seller wouldn't accept that, as a citizen of Canuckistan, I understood the concept of US dollars and would pay (in same) for the product to be delivered to my US friend.

    Vexing.

I'll have to get some from an alternate source on eBay.

Actually, if it isn't removable, I'd call it just the playfield. In the pachinko industry, the cel is really called the gauge board (Sankyo's annual reports lists whole machines and guage boards).

I guess I have done it wrong on my machines. I only clean and polish the heads of the nails. It makes a huge difference and to me the the 'shaft' doesn't show that much. I could be totally wrong on this and one day when I fully clean the nails on a machine I might see the error of my ways!

On my Sankyo I have left the nails as they are, they didn't look badly tarnished or dirty to me

Even though the playfield and fame has now been cleaned up, I actually prefer to see the nails as they are,

just a personal choice, but I like to think it is more in keeping with the age of the machine, also the new nails added to replace the missing ones blend in perfectly so I don't think in my case any cleaning up is needed

Although if I EVER managed to obtain another vintage and the nails are real bad, then maybe I will succumb to the
    many hours of delicate polishing??

yes,i like the patina on the older machines.as with any antique, you do not want it to look like it was just made yesterday.

Well, I guess if people don't mind a little bit of patina on their nails, they prolly don't mind using dirty pachinko balls either. Patina leads to my namesake, tarnish leads to rust, rust leads to weakened and broken nails. Which leads to hassle to repair.

Not me, when I have my machines home and I have the time, I'm cleaning them all to factory produced fresh. Just because they are antiques doesn't mean they have to look like crap hanging on my wall or in my cabinet. Anyone coming over to my house will know they are old cause as soon as they see them, they are gonna ask the question: "Dood, what's that ?" and then I can tell them that the machine is nearly as old as I am.

And 20 years from now, the patina will be back.

Well it must be true what that say then, that beauty must certainly be 'in the eye of the beholder',

I have yet to see a pachinko that looked like 'crap', sure I've seen some sad looking ones, and some in need of major TLC, but 'crap'??

    Never!!

I have to agree with Hanabi. After seeing what Shock is doing to restore that old vintage it make be believe that unless it's been put in a chipper any vintage could be brought back to life.
