    Default Ball Lifting with Monkeyboy

So I'm going to have a go at building a Ball Lifter. I'll use this thread to document my adventure.

I picked up a number of parts today. Mainly a 120v Gear Drive Motor with a rpm of 64, a plastic gear and some round aluminium tube. I know the genuine Ball Lifters use square tube, I don't know why so I've gone with round.

The first job will be to rework the plastic gear to push the balls up the tube then connect it to the drive shaft.

I'm not an engineer, but IMO a square tube = less friction.

if your not afrade of dc and of sticking your neck out you can get them for free. I work for a copier place and when we take machines out of service we deplastic them and then ship them to get scrapped. The large compacity trays (on the side LCT tray) on canons have a real nice gear drive as well as some of the finishers. you can use a old power brick and your going change the voltage and change the speed. Some times i even find a nice 24 volt PS i can seperate.
I just reccommend going to the service dpt of your local copier place and ask "hey im building a project at home can i take asome parts of your junk machines" The worst they can say is no. OR you can have a gold mine for good used parts.
Tools to have in your pocket side cuts (you want both sides of the plugs) Phillips screwdriuver #2 magnetic decent length. Possibily a power screwdriver. Respect the places and try to be in and out quickly.

I found the motor in a local shop brand new for $12.50. But after looking on-line I've found the same one for even less.

So at the moment the total cost has been $17.25. At the moment all I can see spending extra is time.

CW rotation means you will have to put the motor on the left end of the lifter

Today I got to work on the gear. First removed every other tooth with a stanley knife then got the dremel out to sand it down to hold the balls.

Unfortunately the gear had an odd number of teeth so it didn't work out quite as I'd planned. It seems to hold the balls pretty well.

now that one makes sense. high torque, large dia. shaft. just add a bridge rectifier (to convert 24vac to dc) and it can be powered by a pachi transformer anywhere on the planet.

In the description it states that it is a DC motor so it could directly hook up to the machines transformer

the transformers we use output 24 volts ac. the dc motor would lock as it would try to run forward and backward with each pulse of the sine wave.

Has anyone else seen this video ?

YouTube - Marble machine 1 in action

The lifter itself seems so simple it's genius and is shown in DETAIL at the very end of the video ... I plan to implement this into my Pachinko table concept.

When I get down to construction, I'll post detailed design pics. It's not going to be a simple case build, either ... It all starts with measure twice, cut once.
