I use a Berry 400 Tumbler and crushed walnut shells. A local pet store sells the shells so I don't have to worry about extra freight charges. If the metal item is in real bad or grungy shape then I pour in a little polisher. For normal ball cleaning I stick in some novus 1. The balls come out real shinny and seem to stay cleaner.

how long do you run the vibratory thingy?

is an hour all it's going to do, or can I leave it run over night? would that overheat it?

I run my Berry tumbler for weeks, swapping parts every day or two. Have had it for about 7 years.

I bought a cheap one from Harbor freight and the next morning checked on it and the thing had vibrated apart! be sure and check all the nuts if you buy a cheap one and tighten them.

another thing i would do is put blue locktite on the fasteners to keep them from working loose again.

If you want one that will run 24/7, Try a lortone QT12.

I've had one for over 20 years, and it never fails

I use it for brass, pachi balls and tokens, and even rocks

The instructions have different times listed for different materials that you are trying to clean.

I usually let it run for about 2 hours, then I sort by quality, and then run again for another couple of hours.

It seems like all the cleaning that can be done is usually accomplished within 2-3 hours, but i have left it on all day a couple of times... just to experiment.
What really makes the difference is the weight of whatever you are cleaning. The move movement you see, the quicker and better it'll work!

When its time for some new "Media", hit a good pet shop and pick up some clean crushed walnut. I think its sold as bird bedding? I dont remember what it cost from a feed store, but it was really cheap.
The first bucket of media that i used was from a gun shop, and it was really expensive. It was also crushed walnut, but they also added some sort of polish to the mix.

I've also tried some other media, such as throwing in some REAL sand, sweeping compound, and crushed Kitty Litter.

Crushed Kitty litter works great also.

well, i have lots of cat litter, so I can try that on the really rusty ones.

I pulled out the ones that shined already after 2 hours. will go more abrasive on the rusty ones.

try the dishwasher or soaking in a sink with a strong detergent. mostly you just need to cut grease and grime, not actually polish the surface. for polishing plastic, probably something less abrasive than corn cob or shells, like novus or one of the other plastic polishes.
I totally agree. If it's really stubborn grime, a once-over with Gojo White Hand Cleaner (no pumice) will dissolve the dirt. Works wonders on items that have petrified masking tape on them as well. As always, test on a small part of the surface to see if there's a reaction.

I have been using one from Cabela's, but it is just a Berry's 400 made for them. I have found that the walnut leaves the balls a little dull - I have been using about 75% corn cob w/walnut and it gets the balls more shiny. Runs like a champ day after day...

    hey johnny,

I just swapped in sand for the walnut shell stuff. we'll see how this goes

that magnetic picker upper with the long yellow handle and the release at the top (from harbor freight) works great for getting all the balls out of the vibratory bowl.

i've had them going for about an hour now. will post progress later.

also, I'll bring the doo dad back to oakland next week so you can polish yours.

Is it really a vibratory tumbler and not a vibratory polisher? It doesn't really tumble, does it?

What about a small cement mixer? I have seen these at Home Depot and looks like you could put a large amount of tokens(or balls) in there and let er rip.

well, I think it is called a polisher when used for gun shell casings, but the way the walnut shells or sand circulate is like a vortex, churning thing, so it does tumble the balls around, but not like one of those containers that rotates the rocks in a cylinder.

    I won't even ask about digital's comment...

hey batterymaker - i would guess that balls will retarnish with time... just like anything else that oxidizes?

has anyone tried soaking in CLR? my wife suggested that, but i figured I needed to rub the oxidation off with polishing or tumbling.
