Here are the giant pliers doing giant pliers things. Notice the brown black pins! Having prepared a small vat of innocuous looking, happy sounding Bright Boy Polish (the stuff really smells). I announce in a maniacal manner my diabolical plans with ominous laughter whilst wringing my hands, having plucked my steely golden foes from the face of simplicity... No my little pins, I expect you to shine! I quickly set my plan into action before the little cunning adversaries have a chance to escape onto the work area floor, fleeing from the fate which I will deal to them. They will be dipped into the vat of polishing stench!

    - Wow, where do I come up with this junk, I must be tired.

I figure like all small parts, the less time these little things spend free, the less likely I am to loose them in some sort of transportation debacle or process mishap. As of right now I have none to spare so they have become valuable. Plus the Bright Boy face looks kinda menacing in some sort of 50's simplistic way.

Thanks Chewy, now all I can think of is rebuilding this thing in slow motion action with "cha,cha,cha,cha,cha... Da,da,da,da,da" sound effects while a EKG blip pulses by in the faded background when I do anything.

Oh... and if I spend a grand on this machine alone, I think my wife will plunge me into the pit of doom without a return ticket or cool gadget to escape with.

Scrubbing the flowers out with a tooth brush and polish to restore a shine and remove the ??? from the surface was a total success! A little time in vinegar and water bathes to remove any excess smelly polishing compound makes this work well.

Here are the treated pins that look like brass again!

nice work... beep, beep,... beautiful pins there. will have to try some of that brite boy.

while you have the tulips out, make sure they work and that the little fangs don't need adjusting. it's easier than messing with them in place.

I think that you get the award for restoring the most dead machine on the planet... I restored a face and a few mechanicals, but not all the way down to the bare wood from both sides!

While attempting to remove the launcher and play field railing I discovered the following important information:

    - Do Not Taunt Happy Fun Machine
    - Do Not Look At Happy Fun Machine Directly
    - Do Not Mess With Happy Fun Machine
    - Do Not Operate Happy Fun Machine Without Proper Safety Gear
    - Do Not Provoke Happy Fun Machine
    - Happy Fun Machine May Built Very Well and Not For Dis-assembly
    - Happy Fun Machine May Be Very Sharp
    - Happy Fun Machine May Be Dangerous
    - Happy Fun Machine May Cause Harm or Physical Injury
    - Happy Fun Machine May Be Possessed By Evil Alien Incarnates / Spirits

You Sir, are hilarious... as you pour salt on my wounds.

Yes Sir, I had a failure to read the manual that it didn't come with, and I neglected to heed the non existent instructions and warnings. I also think the thing is just plain angry sometimes.

I had become impatient with scrubbing tulips with a tooth brush and opted to test them in the ultrasonic cleaner... Of Doom! This is a unit that you can get at Harbor Freight for about $30. The flowers will be submerged in a natural gun degreaser and detergent. I also wanted to test shining my pachinko balls and pins in the tumbler normally used for firearms brass shells. In this unit I'm using walnut shell (rougher) media.

when I worked in printing, we used to use trisodium phosphate in an ultrasonic cleaner to clean small engraving and printing press parts.

Unfortunately, even in my well stocked laboratory of doom, I seem to be lacking a supply of TSP. Well, no matter, some random minion will pay, pay, PAY, I tell you!

Oh, was that my outside voice?

It's OK, the cleaner I used worked great!

    Thanks,

welcome to the injured pachitalker club. I think it must be one of those merit badges that we earn along the way: me, heavyguitarman, rusty, who922, maybe mopar, too, have all had "incidents" in the past couple months.

perhaps we'll have to put out a warning manual for future pachitalkers to help them avoid common mistakes (having pachinko tip over on top of you, cutting self on sharp sheet metal edges, splashing noxious chemicals...)

really, though, i'm learning and laughing a lot over your posts. I really thought that I was the only one to encounter such "obstacles" in renovations...

    keep up the great posts

    Funny thing.

The subject machine was stable on my bench (by use of my right arm), as I am extremely paranoid about these things falling over while working on them. However, whilst using my gigantic oversize pliers of DOOM, I discovered that when pulling on something really, really hard to make it give way, one should make sure your other alternate mere mortal body components are clear of the path of highly tensioned, ultra sharp spring steel razor parts when becoming impatient and pulling a lot, too much, more, way over enough so the the irritating component snaps and comes free towards ones face.

As I found myself in such a situation, I used my super keen, split second, highly honed skill of "Spastic Panic Reflex Timing" which involves letting go of the control object; Giant Pliers of Doom, holding Shiny sharpened nailed in blades of evil - and watching it recoil in slow motion towards your alternate unsuspecting and immobile body component that was innocently holding the subject in place while yelling expletives, due to the known outcome of the situation you are witnessing coming to light in expedited time.

The sequence of events works out like this:

Hhhheeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, SNAP, Sprooooing..*@$%&...AHHHhhhhhhhh! - Clink, clink.

The final sound is that of the dropped (or thrown) tool.
