Default Basic Wall Mount Cabinet for a Vintage Pachi

I have seen a lot of great ideas for cabinets on PachiTalk and thought I would add my design for a slim, basic wall mount cabinet for a vintage machine.

When I restored this machine last year I had replaced the old wood frame with a new, custom fit frame made of oak, and had added a matching base to it so that it would look nice when set on a table (see photo). Well, my wonderful wife didn't like the "damage" it did to her fung shui, so she asked if I could mount it on the wall.

I didn't want to waste or hide the custom oak frame I made, so I gave it some thought. What I ended up doing was removing the base, then creating a second oak frame to go behind the existing one. I attached both frames together with a piano hinge on the left side, and added a brass fastner on the right side, making it really easy to open open up and refill the jackpot ball hopper or clear jams. You will also see in the photos that I added a shelf inside at the bottom for the losing ball tray so the ball tray wouldn't spill when I opened up the cabinet.

I mounted it on the wall with a beveled "cleat" attached directly into the studs. I also added two additional screws at the bottom for added support.

The end result was exactly what she wanted - the Pachi up off the table, but not too "overpowering" on the wall. I also find that it gets much more use now that it is on the wall and always ready to play. I keep it stocked with about 1,500 balls so that it can be played for quite some time before the jackpot hopper runs dry.

    beautiful work

do you find the weight of the pachinko makes the piano hinge bind much?

what height did you mount it from the floor?

is it better for standing or sitting on the barstool?

    nice job

    Thanks Mudfud!

I used a 30 inch piano hinge and it holds the weight just fine - no binding at all. As for the height, I had my wife sit at the bar stool and hold her right arm out as if she were playing it. That let me know the approximate height the flipper should be at, and I mounted the machine accordingly. It is optimal height for the bar stool, but can also be played by someone standing (I have tall bar stools).

Very nice job, I especially like the oak frame. The wall mounting frame looks identical to mine, so I have to commend you on that as well. I chose to paint it match the wall.

excellent cabinet!i like the oak frame,as well as the hinge allowing the machine frame to swing open from the wall cabinet.good way to access the back without having a front door key.

    Looks great!

I was impressed with the first frame and then blown away with the mounting.

    Good work.

    Jeff -

I like your simple and elegant design and was thinking of doing a similiar set-up for my recently purchased and restored machine. I just wanted to check with you to see if you still feel the Piano hinge was adequate? Was there anything about your design or construction that you would have done differently? Do you have any suggestions or perhaps even a design plan that I could follow?
Any info would be appreciated and kudos again for the clean and functional design.

Thanks for the feedback!! I'm glad you like it and find it helpful.

The pachi has been on the wall and in use for over three years now and the piano hinge is still holding strong. The cabinet works great. I don't think I would have done anything differently with this one.

As for a design plan, well... I kind of made it up as I went along. I seem to work best that way. I don't have anything documented. Sorry.

    Jeff -

I hope you don't mind me asking but can you explain how you installed the cleat? Is the cleat the machine wide board a few inches from the top? If so are the two screws the only thing attaching it to the studs? or did you open up the wall and put a horizontal support between the vertical studs?

    Thanks

Yes, the board across the top of the rear frame is the cleat. I took the piece of wood the width of the cabinet and made a horizontal cut at a 45 degree angle for the length of the board. I then shortened the bottom piece a little and used two 2 1/2" screws to attach the bottom piece to the studs. The studs in my home are 16 inches apart, so I had to center the machine across two studs. I didn't want to open up the wall.

Here is another pic that shows the cleat better.
