    Default Retrobright

Has anyone tried this? As soon as I have free time I will try it and write a report. This may really bring back the original beauty of many of our machines.

If it works it will be the must do restoration step right up there with pin polishing!

    wow! excellent find, eddie!

loved all the chemistry explanations, too (though I hated organic chem in school)

I wonder if I can get the nicotine stains out of my star wars shooter handle, too? these are probably stains, however, and not bromine discoloration.

what are you using these days for pins? brasso? I just can't do the individual polishing thing, so I'm looking for a bulk paint-on/wipe off process.

I use Brasso for BRASS in the gold colored can not the Blue can.

the only true way to get the spectacular mirror finish is by hand polishing the heads with fingers and a soft cotton t shirt.

I have tried all of the other powered short cuts and yes they clean the heads and sort of Polish them but compared to the finger polishing they look extremely dull. If you dont have a finger polished machine next to a short cut polished machine you wouldnt see the difference and I suppose it wouldnt matter.

I am planning on making a video of the process soon but I dont think that it will capture the true shine as photos that I have taken in the past and posted
do not show the sharpness and reflective quality of the finger polish.

yes. brasso for brass. I didn't know they had another one.

it's pretty strong stuff, with ammonia and oxalic acid, but I suppose that's why it works.

have you tried some kind of dremel with a round pointy attachment? I'm going to try a flat polishing disc glued to a concave grinding tip to see if I can get it to work without catching. any of the other wheels and such get ripped up by the edges of the pins, and my fingers get so sore doing the polishing by hand.

the brasso/wipe is not bad, a bit semi gloss, versus bright shiny. it'll do for me.

    thanks for info!

I have used all sorts of polishing tips on a dremel and a full size drill as well using jewelers
polishing wheels and polishes. ( I have a friend that makes High End Jewelry)
and the fingers still seem to be the best. It figures there is no painless quick way to get the same results. I hate polishing pinheads!

The way to avoid the sore fingers is to use the blue latex gloves which I do. It helps reduce the soreness a lot but not completely.

Get some brass tubing from the hobby store with an inside diameter a little larger than the pins, then chuck it in a dremel or drill and stuff it with cotton or Neverdull. Just make sure you keep it mostly full so it doesn't contact the cell face.

That really seems time consuming plus there are numerous heads that touch so you would have to separate all of them. Does this system really work?

You get that thin wall tubing from the hobby store and nails next to one another don't matter. To me, less messy, faster if you have a dremel with the flexible cable.

the miracle cloth is available at safeway now, in the laundry detergent aisle, hanging off hooks.

I picked one up last week. it's good, like having a cloth of never dull. I did try it on the plastics and it took out some cigarette stains (not all, though).

I don't think it will un-brominate the yellowed plastics like retr0bright, though.
