Hi Peteybob. The 1k (or 1000) ohm POT is a higher resistance value than the 500 ohm POT. 1k will allow half the current versus 500 ohms. 2k will allow half the current versus 1k, and so on. Current = Voltage/Resistance.

As I thought about this more, the problem is when you turn the POT down to 0 (louder volume). When the POT is set to 0 ohms or a low value, the full current of the original circuit is flowing from the amplifier output, through the POT, and through the speaker. This is when your POT would start smoking. If you turn the POT up to 1k, you will have the lowest current and quieter volume.

One other thing. I believe most people are installing the POT between the output of the amplifier and the speaker. This is the high current amplified portion of the circuit. So you need a POT capable of withstanding high power (or wattage). I think the best place to put the POT is on the input side of the amplifier as that is the low power part of the circuit. The results would be the same, but your POT wouldn't have to have a high power rating. As you turn the POT up (on the input side of the amplifier), the amplifier would simply provide the same amplification to the now smaller input signal resulting in a smaller output signal, and your volume would be less.

Thanks mt333, that breaks it down more for my simple mind to take in. I will need to pull the machine out sometime and look at it further to see what the value is of the other two working pots. These came already installed on a machine from a US vendor or straight from Japan so it may have been done cheap and quick as I suspect.
