    Default comet II reconstruction

OK, just for the challenge, I took on this machine, last of the 3 from petaluma.

    problems were

    1) crusted in dirt and spiders - into the dishwasher

    2) missing center jackpot linkage - the missing part I asked about a couple weeks ago. the original piece is cast out of plastic, has an odd flare to the outer end, and has 2 pivots points. I considered casting in epoxy, but made one out a bamboo chopstick, 2 nails, a spare plastic washer from the comet II take apart, and a large blob of goop (I love this stuff). It was sticking a little bit (dissimilar plastics, I think), so I weighted the jackpot release with 2 pachinko balls (one is still drying, so it's under duct tape).

    3) missing the brass linkage arm from the center jackpot to the payout linkage (b/c I snitched it for the comet II L). found a scrap of brass, drilled a couple holes, added a piece of wire to provide the sliding hole effect (don't have access to a milling machine right now, all this was done with hand tools)

    4) missing upper ball supply tray - the ikea box from my pachinko picture light was just the right size. cut a whole and added an angled ramp. wired the corner up to make the tilt better.

    5) missing clear circle of plastic for seesaw area - used a piece of discarded plastic from a box of stationary. cut the circle and punched two holes for the screws. you can hardly tell it's not stock.

    6) missing plastic chute - used 1/4 of a protein drink bottle with the neck hooked under the place the old chute hooked. had to leave a gap so the balls didn't stick, but it works fine and the balls don't fall out.

    7) missing the ball track cover (the one that's $25 at vintage pachinko) - used a paint stirrer and another chopstick

    8) all the electrical, except the switches, is gone - i'll get to this as part of final finish. tend to do several machines' electrical in one batch.

below are the pix, hopefully in order as above and continued on 2nd post.

now I feel like I could just about build a pachinko machine from scratch. how about one made of all wooden chutes and seesaws, with metal just for fastening and axles? maybe scraps of exotic woods like rosewood and koa?

p.s. I know that I have to clean the pins, Eddie. wish I could hire a detailer to complete the clean and polish part. I'm just a mechanic at heart.

I just take em apart, clean em and put em back together, haven't had to redo/fabricate any parts yet, I'm impressed by your work.

verry nice job chewy.. very creative solution to the problem of missing parts

replacing one part is hard enough sometimes.. recreating all the things u did hear is amazing

    Nice work

indeed. it's what I love to do... take something broken and fix it with the spare parts and stuff laying around the house and garage. it's not just recycling, but giving that piece of trash (like the chopsticks or juice bottle) one more important job to do.

just wait 'til I get the milling machine going and learn how to weld. then, I might really be dangerous :

you do some amazing things, mudfud.taking a pachinko game that others would consider junk, and abandon it to the garbage can,and making it useable again,so it can be enjoyed again.that is exactly what i do..i like the challenge of fixing something missing some of its parts, and making replacements for them.i have resurrected quite a few pinball machines that were left for dead.i do not have a milling machine, but i do have a welder and know how to use it.that makes me as dangerous as you are.

actually, you're even more dangerous than I am with a welder

I should be learning the basics of welding soon, though it will probably have its most use for me on my electric cars, not pachinko's... well, unless I build some super duper stand or wall mount... now there's an idea

Great job!! I love trying to do that kind of stuff.

I think you should make a JUMBO PACHINKO. Like a wall size machine that uses those balls from the ballpit at Chuckie Cheese, the ones kids jump in. You could use tracks from Hot Wheel car sets. Think of the payout on that bad boy.

if I only had the space... maybe a micro pachinko, with tiny beads, instead?

my lastest idea is a skeleton pachinko. since the comet II's come off the back easily, i'm going to get a large piece of plastic and drill a ball entry hole into it, so then I can see the workings of the the pachinko from the front.

I considered trying to do an acrylic see-though cell, but 1/2 inch thick acrylic is very expensive, I'd have to drill and cement all the nails, and I don't, yet, have a cell bad enough to sacrifice (b/c I keep finding ways to resurrect them)

if anyone has a really bad cell face machine that works in the back, it would be an interesting project for me to make a see though cell so you could see the mechanism with the balls falling through the back.

i'm off to find a cheap large piece of plastic, like maybe target or walmart's or michael's large poster frames, then i'll post some pix.

eddie. did you make a plexi pachi already?

I won't do it if you already did.

he seems to have all the same ideas as I do, but months earlier.

    Hey Chewy,
Have you thought about making the ball supply more complimentary to your machine? Instead of just leaving it plain ole cardboard? I did my catch tray in a 2 tone brown & biege duct tape over a cut to size shoe box that I think looks pretty good. You can get some orange (or any other color) duct tape from www.tapebrothers.com I think there might be a picture of it in my album. If you send me the dimensions, I can make one up for you, I have some orange duct tape (or another color if you like). Or maybe you can send me the actual tray you are using & I'll do it up in the color of your choice. It's the least I could for you for helping me with the light switches.

thanks for the comment, and the "ghetto McGyver" fixes are still working, too, though I bought spare parts from birdbrain to replace several of them, and make the machine more "stock"

i'm getting so I can fix most anything these days. just need to learn to weld and i'm ready for survivor.

    welding is not that hard

u might check the local community collages in your area.. most offer short classes for just such a thing

my neighbor too one for welding last year

i wana learn to weld aluminum

i think good wood working tools and knowledge is more of a benefit with pachi
