they're called "wire bead cages". 8 for $3 at Michael's

I was going to try to make something like that, and then - there they were - at Michael's

saved me a whole lot of time on that idea!

ahhh... ancient chinese secret...

no really, you just bend the cage open, and they spring right back. very cool.
