The 'Mugen CR' dongles in the first link are not ordinary dongles. They are like a 'lite' version of the card reader emulator dongle. They allow the ball loan button to be pressed to dispense 25 balls, but that's all it does. No display, no credits just a simple ball dispense button.

They appear to have been first made at about the same time as I started selling the CR emulator dongles, and at that time they worked out a little cheaper. But the exchange rates haven't been as favourable for them and now I can ship mine to Japan for less than they are selling for.

I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't a patent or legal issue for this in Japan. All due respect to Daverob, but I can't believe in all this time someone over there hasn't come up with the CR Emulator dongle like he did. We're talking millions of people in some way involved in the industry (making, designing, playing), it should have happened by now.

I can't believe that there wouldn't be prior art somewhere that would invalidate the patent, and the costs for a world wide patent would mean that I would have to charge more for the dongles or the whole project would still be in the red.

Besides I'm not a big fan of patents in general. The whole system seems to have been corrupted by lawyers, big corporations, and patent trolls who just seem to jump out from under their bridge and sue anyone who has made an innovative product (without actually making anything themselves). Most patent suites are settled out of court as the patent troll has carefully calculated the licensing cost so that it is cheaper and less hassle than the defendant taking the case to court.

Of course some things deserve patent protection, where there has been a significant investment in R&D to produce a true innovation. But unfortunately I don't think this applies to a great deal of modern patents, and I certainly don't believe my dongle would meet that criteria.

I wouldn't be surprised if the reason behind these types of dongles not being generally available in Japan is due to pre-existing patents on the card reader system, and the licensing costs making the project uncompetitive.
