Just curious... But can you change the video/music on a machine? I mean completly change it to something that is not already on there

It has been talked about here... particularly with regard to the custom machines. I am not aware of anyone actually doing it.

It's one of those topics that comes up every now and then and I don't think anyone has successfully done this

You could try doing a 'search' to try to find the threads / posts/ conversations about it, and find out what the problems were etc, as I can't quite remember at the moment

There are several threads dedicated to this topic. But like they have said, some very smart people have tried. But have been unable to do it yet.

I think the only hope of this ever being done relies with Daverob.... It has to be reverse engineered and the boards are designed to make it impossible.

    Don't all look at me

While this is the kind of thing I'd love to get my teeth into for a technical challenge, it just isn't going to be something I'll ever do, as I like these machines just how they are and my goal is to get as close as possible to the Japanese gaming experience rather than modifying the machines to suit more western tastes.

However if this was something I was interested in, my first step would be to dump the roms for the game (which is not trivial as the gameplay roms are embedded into the secure processor) and try to write a MAME driver for the hardware. This way I could run the game using the MAME debugger to see exactly what is going on when the game is run and then play about with the code in the rom images 'just to see what happens'.

Besides, I'm wondering why there isn't a PachiMAME already. Pinball and fruit machine emulators have already built on the videogames only base of MAME, and I don't see any insurmountable technical reasons that would make a PachiMAME impossible to create.

Of course going back to the original question, replace the LCD with something PC compatible, and hack the boards to get the signals from main control board to the AV control board into the PC and you can display anything you like in response to the various display commands.

I would think that the basic programming and design of the games within a specific manufacturer and frame style would be the same. I wonder if changing over the audio/video board from one game to another would cause different music and video to play, say put a Star Wars board on a Julie. The only issue would be the animatronics. So really, it would be a matter of replacing the audio and video 'files' (whatever format they are on the chips) with whatever you wanted. The hard part is determining what the format is and coming up with everything you need. The rest of the cel face wouldn't necessarily match, but it should be possible. Some of these games have 100's of video sequences, lot's of work (that's why those pachi engineers make the big yen!)
