    Default vintage Pachinko cell redo

this is my hardest restoration to date. I only bothered to try b/c I think this is an unusual sanyo comet, a II L, that I haven't been able to find anywhere else.

the cell shellac was very cracked and the underneath wood and primer are wrinkled. I looked through vintage pachinko's pictures, and I found a machine of this era with the same face delamination. i'm guessing they had a bad batch of paint and/or prep.

at first I tried to keep most of the curled shellac, but after painting I decided it was way too bumpy for good ball gliding. I went back and chipped back all the shellac to where it was flat (like stripping the paint on the house for a repaint), then got a set of acrylics and started mixing to match the cell colors.

my wife, the artist, is much better at color matching than I, so she helped some.

at this point, it's all painted and relatively flat. I plan to varnish it multiple times to see if it will smooth out some. alternately, I may pour epoxy resin and try to give it a smooth layer with that.

mechanically, I have everything working after making new connecting arms.

electrically, I haven't started yet, but that's always the easiest for me and most of the wiring is still there.

Excellent color match!! The repaired cell looks great!

I am tremendously impressed, both by the outcome and by the fact that you would even attempt to repair such an issue!!

looks good.i think your idea of pouring epoxy would give a perfectly smooth surface.

Shy of stripping it completely down like HeavyG, I don't think you could have done a better job with what you had to work with.

    Nicely done.
I'm not addicted to Pachinkos. I can quit at any time. Did I tell you about the three machines that I have on the way?

I think it's a great idea to restore this one especially as it appears to be different from the other Sanyo comets we see here

Neat job on the cell, great colour matching too

    resin pour pix.

decided to use the epoxy resin, so I had the most chance of a smooth surface.

it was not as hard as I imagined. level the machine, mix 50/50, pour over the surface, trying to miss the pockets (I did tape the edge of the lower pockets so resin doesn't pour into the back).

amazingly, most of the bubbles rise to the surface and pop. the ones that don't you can just breathe on (or use a propane torch), and they pop.

it's covered now to keep dust off, and i'm hoping that it sets up hard.

the acrylic paint did not bleed, and the crackled background is much less obvious with this coating.

maybe this is a way to salvage some of those peeling cells.

Sounds like you had fun with that cosmetic operation and now the 'patient' is in the recovery room

Hopefully this will encourage others to restore cells that were previously deemed to be too far gone to attempt

and I work in a hospital, too, so the reference to being in the recovery room is quite appropriate... just remember that the surgery can go great, but the patient still die... I'll be happy if/when the stuff hardens and still looks clear and shiny... and, I am so impatient, I keep looking under there - like that's going to help? I am going to put a heater in the kitchen, though, to speed the setting a bit. ideal temp. is 70-80, and we're in the 50's today (I know, don't complain about the "cold")

say, maybe I could start a "cell restoration service"?

It is amazing when you compare the "before" and "after" pics. You did an absolutely outstanding job!! You took a machine that I would have trashed and gave it a new life.

Congrats on a job well done!!
