the patient is alive and well, upgraded from critical to good condition.

    I think it's a great success!

check out this final picture of the cell, which is now hardened and still clear.

the only problems that I encountered were that I forgot to pull the spinners off and nearly had them stuck - emergency spinnerectomy at the 24 hour mark, when I could pull them up, cut them loose, and push the epoxy back down; second problem was that the resin did come up on the side of the left tulip - i've tried to cut back the soft resin, and i'll have to make some kind of right angle miniature blade or saw to cut the rest of the sticking plastic off the back of that tulip wing.

the scotch tape came off no problem. no major bubbles got trapped. there are a few waves and shallow grooves from where the epoxy shrank, but otherwise it's quite smooth. I just have to grind the holes open where the spinners go, and i'm on to electrical.

I am very happy with the result. I see even more pachinko restoration possible now (oh, oh). I just love all the new adhesives, tapes and resins on the market now - sure beats chewing gum and bailing wire, eh?

second picture is the living room with the "wall of pachinko". the wife has allowed me to redecorate (and I think that the lower part of the window views was ugly anyway, with cars, garbage cans and weeds...).

well, mudfud is short for m.d., ph.d., so it's really doctor-doctor , but I prefer chewy, even at work.

OK, here's what the finished comet IIL looks like. even shined the chrome, plastic and nails.

the epoxy layer on the cell worked out really nicely. I put the spinners back on after shaving the plastic pretty smooth. the one slight problem is that epoxy flowed under the petals of one of the tulips. I have spent hours chipping behind it so that it does let balls through, but still has to have a little kick to drop the petals open... next time remove any moving parts before pouring epoxy!

she turned out really nice and I added an LED (though no drilling) in the center baseball piece. this will be wired in parallel with the jackpot light, once I buy a resistor, and will flash in the center, too, with payouts.

I had to completely rewire the circuit board. someone had it all messed up. luckily, I had another comet II to refer to and everything's stock again.

btw, compirate, i put the low ball light in the orange window to be separate from the jackpot light. i'm sure that's where it was originally.

only other thing I did was a lot of touchup with silver paint marker and sharpie marker. really makes a huge difference and is pretty easy, though tedious.

I included before and after pix of the next comet II, the reconstruction one, as that is coming along into the detailing phases, too. the mechanicals are still sticking a bit on that weird piece I had to make. may start over with epoxy putty and shape one like the original, inserting nails before it sets hard. this way I can recreate the curved and flared surfaces. mine is sticking every once in awhile. also have to add all the wiring back on this one, but knowing how the others work, it shouldn't be bad.

what will I do if the new machine shows up brand new? i'll be at a loss for something to fix... guess it's time to start putting pachi's in all the bedrooms. the living room's overflowing...
