    Default MAME help

I have an older version of Mame and a few hundred roms that I have had for about 8 years now. It has worked great on computers running win95,2000 and XP. now I just got a new laptop running vista and I get a message saying one of my dll files is out of date. Is there a newer version mame I need to run and if yes will my roms still be good?

I googled some info...The recent versions of mame should work fine, I have mame32. it works fine with Vista. You just need to make sure that the folder you put it in isn't protected by Vista.

Do they pass the audit test? or does it come up with a frequency HTZ bar?

they don't pass the audit test but some roms that didn't work on my older version now work like tetris and moon patrol. I tried every version of mame available on that page and the older one v.62 gave me the most working roms almost 100 more then the newer version. Donkey kong jr. and 3 work fine but not the origanal. Its not a big deal because I have DK on my 48 in 1 board and I have Neo GeoMVS versions of the other games that are not working anymore.
I just find it strange that the newer the MAME the less roms that work, unless they need newer versions of the roms? It took years to find all the ones I have now I'm not going to start all over again.

Rom World, and Romnation are the places I get mine. Roms are always being upgraded by those that will notice something "Just ain't right" with the one they have. The most popular upgrade I have found is with the Samples (sound files) People will spend the time remastering the sounds so it is as true to the original as possible. You shouldn't have any problem finding the roms you need with those sites.
Since some roms are to big to work with just a simple 8 bit system, they roms may come in "sets". You will need both sets to run the game. DK isn't one of those (Donkey Kong (US set 1) Rom Download for MAME at ROMNation.NET), but games like 1942, and Galaga (midway) have more than one set and it's a two file download.

Darn It!!! All this talk, now I have to go play some serious asteroids on my Cocktail cabinet. All Well!

P.S. One last note, Look for variations too. Sometimes Donkey Kong won't be spelled "Donkey Kong" in the file name on the site. It may be called Dkong, DonKey, etc. Pacman's original name is puckman.

You were right on with the samples. I never copied the sample folder over to the new version. Donkey Kong came on line now.

A 7z file is a type of compression file...like Winzip, Winrar. It's a self extracting file. I beleave that it is coined as a "double zip" file. After it extracts, you end up with the full zip file for the Mame to play.
