    Default The hudson crash

    hopefully this works
LiveLeak.com - Hudson Crash from Coast Guard Camera

Video of the US Air Hudson River landing. The actual landing is 2 min, 2 sec into the video. Good view of how strong the current is in the Hudson .

The link in this email will take you to a Coast Guard tape of the USAir landing in the Hudson River .

If you watch closely at the 2:00 point of the tape you will see the landing on the left side of the screen. Check the speed of the river current after the aircraft comes to a stop. I wonder if it helps to land "downwater"?

This is a remote camera operated by the Coast Guard as part of Port Security. Once they realized the plane was down, they then moved the camera around and zoomed in & out on the aircraft & rescue vessel.

Find the icon in the picture and it will show full screen.

The Ferry boats help to save the day. without out them there would not have been enough room for all the people.

[QUOTE I wonder if it helps to land "downwater"? [/QUOTE]

In this situation it does but not of any significance. The speed at which the plane hit the water would be diminished by only a few knots.
The only real rough part of landing in the water (Ditching) (Excluding waves in this instance) is when the engines are caught by the water or wing tips from a banked angle.
This was not the case here as the plane was in a landing descent, wings level, in a gear up configuration.
It was the engines drag that stopped the plane abruptly. Remember the force sheared the engines off of the wings.
On other planes with fixed gear or Props its the gear or props that would be the drag force.
When those engines hit the water it must have been some jolt, just like catching an arrestor hook on a carrier landing.
Wonder if anyones dentures few out?
