actually, I think it got caught up in a spider web and eaten. I found a whole family of these caught in the webs... and these other ones rolled up like the pill bugs I know of.

hey digital, I totally agree that anything that is a "louse" makes my skin crawl.

when I worked in SF at an ER in the tenderloin (a red light, druggie, homeless area), I had patients that were infested with body lice, scabies and sometimes even bed bugs... I often had to strip coming in the back door and put all my clothes into the hot washer, followed by a total soap down... fortunately, I don't work there anymore

O.K. I'm trying to redeem myself in this thread. No more bug references
    For now

I was working on a new to me machine and the shooter didn't have enough spring in it's step. Rather then replace I was just going to cut and bend the spring to add a little more tension.
Inside the spring I found this old piece of Japanese newspaper rolled up
At first I thought it was a secret message or maybe a treasure map.

Has any one else found there own or know why it would have been there

Hey that's quite exciting, I wonder if we can get some translations??

even if it's just a manufacturers label, it's still really interesting

I see this wad in the spring quite frequently. I always thought it was placed there to dampen any noise the spring makes when you flick the lever.

    Nice looking machine!!

Ebb - you beat me to this post. I found the same thing in both vintages that are in my workshop right now. I haven't looked at the third. I figure maybe the thinking is that it would dampen the sound or feel of the spring somehow.

For the record I put it back inside before I bent and reinstalled the spring.

I didn't replace the newspaper and it didn't make a difference in the sound or action. Could be because it's 35 years old and brittle at this point, maybe I'll try with a new piece of newspaper and see if it makes a difference.

Will a 35 year old Japanese spring tolerate a modern central NJ newspaper?
