    Default cleaning rusted metal parts

    hi guys.

I have done a bit of searching of the forum, but wondered what most people use for the tin metal pieces that are rusted.

I was planning to use a little steel wool, then some kind of metal polish, although I didn't want any greasy residue that would track into the cell.

brillianeze was recommended by eddie, i'll go get some of that. I also have a motorcycle cleaner from honda that worked well on both plastics and metal on my bike.

ideally I would put a light oil coating on the metal to prevent rust, but I don't want to do this with the balls running across them.

    thoughts?

I have found that #0 steel wool is the best method for removing rust from all metal parts. I do not put anything on the metal after cleaning for the same reasons you mention (residue on the balls).

I would be interested to hear of any other solutions that folks have to clean the tin guides.

Steel wool is fine. A wire brush on a drill works really well. If you have a tumbler it makes things very easy. DO NOT USE OIL on the metal when your done. You can use a metal polish but thats it. Sometimes a lot if not all of the rust can be removed with WD40 and a rag. Only be sure to clean all residue with alcohol or windex when done.

Steel wool is wonderful. But I prefer 'Ceramabryte' and the sponge that comes with it. This is a product that is designed not to scratch glass top stoves. And has worked wonders for me.

A good soak in WD40 will dissolve most rust.

for parts that need to work smooth, that no one will see... my Dremel Stylus and the wire wheel are unbeatable.

I drop them in a bath of CLR (Calcium, Lime, Rust remover) or the the cheap knock off brand, let them sit a little while, pull them out, rinse them off with water then polish them with a metal polish. If they are small enough I'll drop them in the tumbler after the CLR and before the metal polish

I heard on the net that aluminum foil and a little water takes rust off and shines crome, I didn't believe it untill I tried it. It gets the rust out of crome pitts and smooths the rough edges. I haven't tried it on the tin parts yet. I also used Maguires Boat polish on the brass and plastic parts that worked great. I haven't tried it on the tin parts yet either.

I have used a can of chrome polish from napa. i bought it for bumpers but it works great on the chrome frame. a little on a soft cloth and a little elbow grease. no more rust and a great shine.. works exactly the same as brasso.

Castle, does this cloth leave any residue behind that you have to clean up afterward?

You do have to polish the item afterwards with a clean , soft cloth . The amazing thing about this cloth when it gets dirty it cleans the item better .
