Alright! My brother comes through big time:

One of the Mandarin fellowship was cooking in the church kitchen tonight so I showed them the pictures.
My friend laughed out loud when she saw the specific slogans (the 4 character squares). I think because they are so nationalistic or old fashioned?

My understanding of her comments. =]

from top to bottom: Build / Country / Must / Succeed
meaning: We will establish our Nation

top four characters: Republic of China [ROC]
    bottom two: forever (long life)

reads from top right down then left column down
meaning: chase out foreigners (non Han Chinese)

reads from top right down then left column down
meaning: gather together strength / be strong together

    means: united

meaning: Return our Land (river and mountain)
(Referring to taking back the mainland)
contains character for mountain (bottom left) and river (top left)

    Follow-up email from my brother:

    Interesting…
Found this reference by googling “historic pachinko in Taiwan”

“The piece he considers most valuable is a pachinko machine from the early 1950s, just after the Kuomintang government relocated to Taiwan. The machine is adorned with various slogans from the period, such as "Fight the communists and resist the Soviets," "Attack the fake capital," and "Smash the communist bandits." The pachinko balls are fired out from the southern part of a map of Taiwan and bounce around the various provinces and cities of the mainland. Wu spent over NT$100,000 to acquire this rare item, which is not just entertaining, but highly historically noteworthy. Now it sits in the House of the Chief of the Neighborhood in Taiwan Storyland, one of the over 20,000 pieces in Wu's collection.”

    googling” taiwan pachinko”
“In early 1920’s pachinko machines were first built as “Corinth game" (コリントゲーム), which means a children’s toy. Later emerged as an adult pastime in 1930s. After the World War II, all the pachinko machines were closed down but were re-generated in 1940s and are still popular till today. Taiwan too have many pachinko machines because of Japan’s influence over Taiwan in WWII.”

“Taiwan also has many pachinko establishments due to Japan's influence during their occupation in the early 1900s.”
    Wapedia - Wiki: Pachinko

haha, I came across your forum thread by googling “1940’s Taiwan pachinko”

BTW, that $100,000 value is in Taiwan New Dollars: 100,000.00 TWD = 3,000 USD. Of course, 3 grand is still pretty good considering that's 10 times what I paid for it.

very cool. that means that your machine is truly a collector's item.

i'll pass off the other translations to my dad, too, as he was curious about the couple that he couldn't translate.
