    Default Chrome Plating

Has anyone had the door frame and ball return door re-chromed?

Not that I recall. That would be pricey, wouldn't it? I know of one member that replaced them.

Guess I'm going to pull one and find out. Actually, I don't think it's all that expensive, but I'm more concerned about how much prep is needed to get a good result.

I'm pretty sure that the base metal needs to be a smooth as possible to get a good finish. Since a couple of mine are pitted pretty bad, I'm wondering if anyone has gone through this process and what they might have done to get a smooth finish?

Prepping them is the key. If you have the plating company prep them, they are going to charge a fortune. Whenever I send Slot machine parts out for chrome, I spend the time to prep them and get them as smooth as possible. A slot handle or a gooseneck (parts on antique slot machines) usually run about 50 each to plate.

I usually have excellent results when I use #0 steel wool on the chrome (available at home improvement stores). It won't scratch and it removes all of the rust and most of the pitting. Sometimes I need to scrub hard to get the finish looking like new again.

Make sure you wear gloves when you do use steel wool, as it will make your fingers sore after a while.

    Good luck!
