Default New Member with a "new" vintage machine

    Hello all,
A couple of years ago I purchase a machine off of ebay as a repairable parts machine. I received it and it was covered in grease, obviously from sitting in a garage. I cleaned it up and started trying to figure out how it worked. I had never played one or seen one in operation. Merely had been fascinated by one I had seen when I was 9 years old (Im 38 now). Well, I figured it out and got it into good working order as it remains to this day. THis machine is the one pictured with the blue playing field.
Today I saw one on Craigslist and went ot look at it. I ended up taking it home for $40. I was happy to see it had a totally different mechanical system than the previous machine. Meaning I got to go through the incredibly enjoyable learning process all over again...seriously, I sort of get off on that sort of thing. My 13 year old son was equally as engaged in fixing this thing as well. Together we leaned it up, replaced the glass and had it working in about 2 hours tonight. I'm loving it. I look at my old one and it now makes me sort of sad.
So I am wondering if anyone can tell me anything about these two machines. I know the new one is a Sanyo Comet II but not sure about the old one. The guy I got it from seemed fairly knowledgable and said it was from the 40's. Anyone know the age of the new one? Anyhow...I look forward to perusing this site and seeing everyones projects and collections. Now to figure out how to post photos.

The newer one is most likely from the 70s and the older one from the 60s.

You have some nice machines there! As for the ages, first let's go to the quickest process todate a machine. In the lower left corner of the newest machine there are the certification/expiration stickers. It appears that the older machine has them in the upper right. In the Japanese writing on these stickers you will find two numbers. Generally is like this (with # representding Japanese characters) # # # 48 # # # 6 # # . What these numbers represent is the year (Japanese Calendar) and the month the machine expires. If you add 1925 to the first number you have the year in the Roman calendar and the last number is the month. This is the date of expiration. In the example it would be 1973. I believe that the expiration time frame was 3 years, so substracting that from the year of expiration and you have the year of manufactor of 1970.

Now for the 'generic dating' the older machine you have is a 'single shot' version and those were only made up until the early 60's I believe. The multishot flipper style was made someone where between the late 50s and late 80s. Again, the experiration tags are your best bet for dating.

I to have recently joined PachiTalk after purchasing a machine at a garage sale. Now I have 4 of them... it's addicting!

Welcome to PachiTalk and I look forward to more post from you!

Cool, I appreciate the feedabck, welcomes and helpful info. I'll check out the expiration tags when I get home this evening. My next goal is to learn if there is a way to mount these in the wall so that they are flush and do not become an obstacle in the hallway. With studs in my home being 16" on center I realize i will have to rip out alot of drywall and build headers and such. Anyone ever do this?

Wow.. that's an interesting concept... permanent mountings. Hmmm...

Having built a few custom cabinets myself, my first thought would be depth. One of the cabinets I built had about 5" in depth and that was barely enough room for the workings and a place for the balls to drop through into a lower hopper. However, if.. you put to machines side by side... did a header... hmmm...

Ok.. see my drawing below for an start on the design.

    Good luck!

I think the biggest problem to mounting them in the wall would be access. Derbyman in the link had access to the back from the unfinished part of the basement. As temperamental as the vintage machines can be, I would want easy access. Although if that could be figured out, that we be a great way to encase them.

    Welcome to the Show.

The machines are all hinged in their frames just replace the locks and you will have rear access to the wall mounted machines.
