Of the three machines I have (with DB-25 connectors), only one has the "dongle" as well. That's the Pao Gao (aka King of Animals, aka Lion King).
It was from SlotUSA also (originally).

The other two (Giant 7 and Twin Vision) don't have dongles, but they DO have a hole burned into a plastic cover on the back... looks to be with a soldering iron. There is then a solder bridge (blob) inside that area, shorting out two pins of an IC on the circuit board under it... it looks to be an optical isolator IC, commonly used when interfacing machines to computers. This is probably perfoming the same function as the dongle.

I don't remember that... but he did do a pinout of the dongle around here somewhere. Listed parts and everything.

Great! Thanks for the info guys. I did a search and came across this thread. Hopefully I can make one of these and it will fix our problem. I'll let you guys know how it turns out. Thanks again.

Well, I made a key like what was described in the previously mentioned thread. I'm not sure if it worked or not. I plugged the key in and the error came up. We turned it off and let it set for a while plugged in and it seems the error goes away after being plugged in but turned off for so long. Could this error be due to a cap or something that needs to be charged before it will function correctly? Anyway, back to the story. Now when we turn it on it reads "007". Then goes to what looks like a attract screen with the name of the game and everything. I guess we just can't figure out how to start a game. Is it supposed to start automatically? We've pushed all the available buttons on the front and they don't seem to do anything.

You have it loaded with balls right? Both the upper rear hopper and the front ball tray. Now that it's lighting up, when your turn the handle to shoot a ball, is it trying to shoot one and not? Is it making a clunking noise?

Yes, wee have it loaded with balls. We only put a few balls in the front tray, but the rear hopper is full. It is still not trying to shoot a ball when the handle is turned. No clunking noise.

I'm new to all this but I figure it couldn't hurt to ask if you were touching the metal ring around the outside of the shooter knob while you were testing. I know it took me some time to realize I needed to do this when I got my first machine. Seems like with all the testing you've been doing you would have touched it by accident but as I said it couldn't hurt to ask.

All you should have to do is turn the handle and it should shoot. I'm at a loss as to what to suggest next. The error is gone but it still won't shoot? Weird.

I'm not sure what metal ring you're referring to. I'll have to take a look next time. Like I said, if we plug it up and immediately turn it on we get the error code. If we leave it plugged in and turned off for 10 minutes or so then turn it on we don't. That's why I'm thinking either a battery some where or a capacitor is causing the error.

We've even manually shot the balls by flicking the plunger with our finger and it won't score when it goes in a pocket. What about the key lock on the back? It looks like it may be 3 positional since there are 3 lights next to it and none are on.

Also, there are 3 LEDs on the board that drives the pulse motor. A red, yellow and green. Both the green and red LED are lite, but the yellow is not. Should they all be lit or just the green?

    WB,
Your shooter knob probably doesn't have the metal ring. Unfortunately my only experience is with a Lord of the Rings machine so my knowledge it limited at best. On the LotR there is a metal ring just behind the finger tip catches on the shooter knob. Unless my finger tips are touching the metal ring my machine will not shoot.

your hand is making a passive ground, so the machine can not run unattened

Thanks. I'm pretty sure that I did not place my hand behind the shooter knob. I just rotated it from the front. I'll have my father give that a try and see what happens. At worst, I'll have to wait another week to test it out myself. I'll let you guys know.

Somewhere on there is metal... either the spin knob itself, or in front of, or behind it. Gotta touch it to fire the shooter solonoid. Kind of like a touch lamp.

Also, check the connection from that control... make sure it's properly seated. Unplug and plug... try it again.

    Good luck.

Okay, back on this project. It's been a while, but I've loaded it up and brought it to my house so I can work on it in my spare time. This means I won't be having to wait until the weekends to try and fix it. I browsed through the tech forum and noticed that another dongle pinout was provided. I guess the first thing I'm going to try is to create a second dongle with this alternative pinout and see if that could be the problem. The original post where I got my pinout has since been removed, but I think it was provided in that thread also. I'll run by someplace today and pick up aonther DB-25 connector.

Okay, I made the new dongle and something's happened that's never happened before. I can push a button on the back and the motor actually turns! Problem is, it seems to be turning the wrong way. It's still doing that awful beeping noise with the error code, but I'm excited. One step at a time!

Hmm.. seems I can get the motor to turn now whether the dongle is off or on. This is so confusing.
