We're all gonna die! on wednesday

Now, I'm no scientist, I havent even worked out how to change the bulbs on Thunderbirds yet, but there are sources saying that there's a 1 in 50 million chance that this whole thing could go 'Lady-chests Uppermost', shall we say! Every week or so, someone wins the National Lottery Jackpot defying odds in excess of 14 million - 1. So it's roughly three times less likely that the Apocalypse will come on Wednesday. Or to put it another way, its as likely as three people sharing the National Lottery Jackpot. How often does that happen??? Oh poo... we're all doomed!!! And the more they use this thing ( at £4 billion, I'm expecting this Large Hadron Collider is reusable, not disposable!) then statistically, the more likely it's going to cause the end of the world.

On the subject of the LARGE Hardron Collider, couldn't they have built a Regular Hardron Collider and saved £2 billion, or was it a deal like McDonnalds where they got to go large for an extra 50p?! Seriously, if they could save £2 billion by having a Small Hadron Collider (BTW, be careful how you spell Hadron, folks, it only takes one small typo as I just found out...) why not just build a small one?

Now for the really worrying thought of the day. The only way 'scientists' can usually secure £4 Billion pounds to fund the building of a machine that they're not entirely sure is going to work is for them to claim that any results from the experiments may have military use at some stage. I.e., at some point, it could be used as a weapon or to develop new types of weapon based upon its findings. While the Wright Brothers tinkered with the idea of powered flight, it wasn't until a major war broke out, that we decided planes might be a good idea. Forget 'Air Supremacy', this thing could lead to devices that give you 'Atomic Supremacy' or even 'Climate Supremacy'. Imagine that. No need to send troops into battle any more, just melt the physical matter in the immediate vicinity. A weapon like that would, in the wrong hands, lead to Global Domination. Maybe wiping the planet on Wednesday doesnt seem like the worst case scenario after all...

I also stated about the fact that i doubt that theyll just dismantel this thing should it work great, they'll just move onto bigger and better things. i wonder if theyll unlock the mysteries to Time Travel or Teleportation...

Also, i dont know if this is right, but what i think is.. when you were talking about the lottery... its the odds of "ONE" person/ticket winning the lottery, so for example, if noone buys the lottery except for one person, the chances of that person winning are about 14 mill to one. Obviously because there is more tickets sold, that means there is now LESS chance of someone NOT to win the jackpot.

Nick, I used to work in casinos, so I know what you are trying to say about the odds. I have a Post Grad in Casino Management and part of that includes stats and probability. When I typed it, I knew that the arguement was flawed but at first glance, it does make for a scary knee-jerk soundbite! As for posting it on the Daily Mail site... hope they have a sense of humour!
