Smile Digital TV boxes for antenna use

I've been reading reviews on these and the Zenith from Circuitcity is the best one for the money

Bestbuy has the same thing but it has a generic name "Insignia".

they are both the same, with very good picture quality

Buy the Zenith Digital to Analog Pass-thru TV Tuner/Converter Box and other HD receivers TV tuners at circuitcity.com

you can call or go online to get the $40.00 off coupon from the government mailed to you with a limit of 2.

I know most members have cable or dish, but I thought this may be helpful to some.

I'm putting my Direct tv on standby for the next 6 months and am going to give this a try.

free is better than over $60.00 a month

I saw the Insignia one and the quality was pretty crummy. The 3 buttons (ch-up, ch-down, off/on) all had plastic flash and the case metal was so thin. There was no remote or any switchable I guess analog holes for game boxes. If you get a bad one they will only exchange them for a limited time. They were barely worth the the difference of the value less the government coupon. The coupon I'm sure for them is pure profit. But if they start exchanging them for expired coupons I'll get one.

I bought 3 Nippon TV transmitters and I'm have them hooked via the RCA cables on the cable boxes. I have 3 TVs on cable and one without in the kitchen. I can watch any channel from any other TV in the house on the kitchen TV. The Cable boxes all have remotes and reach from the kitchen. I may get a 4th for the media center PC and run a robot TV station with it and transmit movies from the hard drive but that remote won't reach the kitchen.

I could also get one for the Insignia box so I can still watch the spanish car dealer ads on the weekends in the kitchen. They are the only thing that cable doesn't have yet.

They should also make one that takes batteries or can hook up to 12volts so I could use it with my old watchman or the portable TV that I have.

While I don't like Walmart, they have the best deal on converter boxes. Just $10 plus tax with your $40 voucher, gets you the latest RCA converter (DTA800B1 newest rev) with pass through and smart antenna feature. keepmytv.com
I bought two and they work well enough, and are quite small. Another of the smaller units with greater functions is the DTV Pal which is close to $30 with shipping and $40 voucher. dtvpal.com

Hope this info helps. There are many other choices out there.

Dish Network $40 DTV converter is now available. Use your $40 government coupon and it is free, plus $8.95 shipping.

I wouldn't sweat remembering to read the instructions first because .if at first you don't succeed the wife will always remind you that you didn't read the instructions

Smile Re: Digital TV boxes for antenna use

I went to Circuit city today and bought a 2nd box for my other tv, I took my neighbor who is in his 80's to get his too.

on the way back I told him how to hook it up, then said turn on and press menu and follow easy instructions

I went next door about 2 hours later and he still haden't figured it out

so I set it up for him and explained everything once more. now this guy was a radio man in the army in world war 2 and he was still lost in the new technoligy.

he kept wanting to change channels on tv and not the box, I spent a good 1/2 hour trying to go over it all, but, I think he is still lost.

    Its h#ll to get old!!

he gets more channels with his rabbit ears than I do

Well it hooked up easy, took a few minutes to download the guides and stuff...it found 19 channels (5 analogue usually) but only about 10 are coming in at all!!

The channels receiving at about 80+% are coming in super good..but most aren't!!

I have a really small antenna so hopefully getting a good antenna with fix the other channels..

I guess I still have 3 months to find one!!

I prefer analog static (where you can still watch stuff) to digitals all or nothing stuff, but oh well!!

One other problem I may have with this tv at work is its on a switch, so I may need to set it up every morning, we'll see..

Once I get to use some of the features I'll report back, but so far it seems ok..

It will also be interesting to see how much better or worse reception is at home..

I have the Zebith ddt901 and have it on a power strip, it does remember the settings even after being shut off for a day or longer.

I'm not allowed outdoor antennas here and have been experminting with different indoor setups with an amplified booster. a good antenna does pull in more stations.

    As always I'm Over Kill.

This is the antenna I have on the Roof. It has a Rotor to spin it 360 degrees. From here in Jacksonville pointing south I can pull in stations from Orlando.

    West out to Tallahassee.

    And north up into Georgia.

All totaled about 29 channels. It's been up 4 years now and has NOT become a Lightning Rod yet but it is well grounded in case that ever happens.

The other antenna is for a Scanner.
