    Default L-Pads

Does any one know the minimum wattage L-pad I can get a way with using on a machine? The 50 watt Large knob-ed one has been used by others here. But parts express has a 15 watt 3/8 shaft for less and would work out better for me. I could use help before 1:30 today So I can Order. Thanks Laz.

The reason those of us have gone with 50watt is because we don't know the wattage and want to be safe. I am starting to think the 15 watt is sufficient though since the $3 radio shack potentiometer works.

You might try looking for some sort of designation on the speaker itself.

I've been using the 15 watt for some time now and works great. My first concern was the 15 watt power rating. So I waited until I had just finished a bonus round, figuring that would put the most stress on it. I then felt the metal case of the L-pad. It wasn't even warm. So I'd say that 15 watts is more than enough.

I like these because they are small and can easily be stuck near the speakers, and they are cheap - under $2 if you buy 10 or more.

I've never had a problem with 15 watt L-pads. I've tried both. The 50W are overkill.

Also see my PM to you, Laz, that I just got done writing. I'll also post it in the Tips/Tricks section. A temporary volume control solution (other than cotton balls) while you're waiting for L-pads to arrive (and may even be an answer if you want to take the risk).

    The place is Parts Express[/url]http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage.cfm?DID=7&WebPage_ID=3&Start=1&ObjectGro up_ID=196&sm=1&so=2&search_type=65073702&des c=ASC
The one I picked is on the next page. Part#269-112 Fifty watt flush mounting and cheaper than a L-Pad and then face plate. Only draw back is if only two speakers the you can use one doul.

What gauge wiring do you all use to connect the speakers to the L-Pad? 16-ga?

So far I have been able to wire up the L-pads by just cutting into the existing wire. If you need to add more wire, just pick something looks about the same as the wire that's already running to the speakers.

On the babel that i am putting L-PADS in I wont them mounted on the side of cabinet. This means I have to run a lot of wires. Three for each speaker. This is o lot of wires! So I used whats called Rainbow Wire a four conductor-24-gauge solid wire from Radio Shack Part# 278-858. I did not see a stranded but the solid worked good and it looks to be the same size as the wire from my speakers. It is white black red and green. Just split the end with a utility knife and peel the green off fore the length of wire needed. This worked nice ran only three bundled wires up to the L-PADS. I also used this same wire when running the wires for the auto stop coin mod. They were small enough gauge to solder to the chip and nicer to run around the inside of machine. When I could I fallowed the existing wires and used plastic zip ties to secure them. At the door openings I look off the plastic coil and bundled them then replaced the plastic coil. Now the wires are protected just like the original bundled wires of the machine. If you look at the inside of machine it looks close to original appearance. I will be posting pics of both the L-PAD And auto stop with credit mod when I finish and have the time.

If I remember, another reason I bought the 50 watt was for the 1" shaft. It took every bit of it plus I had to counter sink the hole a little to get the shaft to make it through the cabinet and able to mount a knob on it.

I'll try to keep my eyes open for a good supplier of multi-conductor stranded wire, in the 18 to 22 gauge range.

Any time an installation is permanent, and doesn't require movement, solid wire is OK. But if it will be flexed, such as along the door hinge on a pachislo, it really should be stranded. Solid wire will stress and eventually break in a place like that.
